It depends on the nun, I'd think.
I knew a sister many years ago who not only talked openly about her personal life & relationships (before taking her vows). She regularly counselled young women on sex and relationships.
She also was an exceptional poker player.
I don't think it'd be offensive to ask if she had a boyfriend before the vows. Anything more specific than that, well.....

I suppose it depends on the nun. Some nuns might not want to tell you about their private lives, while others might want to share what their life was like before so they can explain why they came to be a nun. So the answer is...I don't know. How well do you know this nun? Just try to use your best judgment.

Not offensive. Remember, nuns were not BORN nuns...and very few became nuns at 18 years of age.

The rules of common courtesy are no different for nuns than for any other person. Do you know her well enough to ask such a personal question? If not, then it would be rude or invasive for anyone, wouldn't it? Some kinds of confidential information need to be reserved for close friends and family we trust.

I see nothing wrong with asking that. After all they did have a life apart from that prior to becoming a nun

I don't think I would personally, it seems a bit invasive. It really depends on the nun, some of them are a little stiff.

Of course it wouldn't. Nuns are people too. It's just now they have taken a vow of chastity.

There's nothing wrong with wondering. You should be able to ask valid questions without people being offended, but religion makes people easily offended and blockheaded. Don't do it if there's a ruler anywhere in the room.
