He doesn't destroy them, but you have to fix them and pull out some excess fibers everytime. We usually just put them up before we leave, but I still notice little scratch marks on the carpet where the rugs were!

He has plenty of Nylabones and sleeps on the couch, we do not leave him the bathroom without any toys.

It might be an attention thing...He's making a statement. Mine does silly things like that. He noticed a response when he did it the first time, whether the response is negative or positive. He's saying, "look at me"!....As long as mine aren't being destructive, I find the little things they do, endearing.

He is bored. Make sure he has a toy to play with while you're out. Failing that, close the bathroom door or invest in a crate for the dog - our lab did the same thing and is now happily sitting in her crate when we leave. It's not cruel - she sleeps and chews her toys and is happy to go in when we say "kennel up!"

My older dog does that as well. I believe she's just making a bed. If there isn't a blanket or a rug for her mess up she tries ripping up the carpet.. Try giving him an old blanket, preferably one that smells like you.

He's bored and anxious and it makes him feel better - like people who bite their nails. Be glad that's the worst thing he does!!! At seven years old, you're not going to break him of this. Leave an old rug down for him to maul...

I believe its a form of nesting. Bathrooms are small like a cave and in the wild they would be in a cave moving the dirt around until they find that comfort zone.

Dogs feel separation anxiety just like children do, but I'm not saying that's necessarily the case. It could be that he's just bored.

it has been my experience that dogs do not like to be confined in small spaces such as a bathroom they tend to need freedom and a place to squat if needed unless your pooch has had extensive training on facility usage you may want to properly train him/her to roam your entire home without tearing up your amenities

sounds like separation anxiety. Look it up on the web and see if any suggestions may work for your dog.

He is trying to tell you that he doesn't like your carpet. Buy a wooden bath mat.
