Right click on the file in Windows Media Player and go to properties. This will display both the audio and video codecs the file was encoded with. At this point, if one of them is red and has a '!' next to the name, it means your system doesn't have it. Search the internet at this point and you'll likely find the codec you need to install.

Some codecs will come with a special player...I try to avoid these since you can usually find a codec that will work with Windows Media Player.

Unfortunately, I have yet to come across any good codec management software, but this process has usually solved most of my problems.

You can try two things.

The first is a codec-less player. You can find it at http://www.videolan.org

The second is go onto Google and search for the K-Lite Codec pack. This codec pack contains hundreds of codecs that are widely used, as well as some that aren't.

Actually codec isnt the problem. Software is. Codec is a driver that allows a certain type of media (ie divx) play on your computer. You need to do a search for codec forthe file format you downloaded. Which is more than likely going to be divx.

I periodically have codec errors as well. I have found that if you download divix, it solves most of those problems. Just type divix in a search.
