I was going to say something witty, but the guy above punched in first. All hail Mr. Answer!

As for mechanical projects- that's pretty broad. Narrow it down- like a mechanical concept you'd like to demonstrate, or a function you'd like to preform, and we'll try to help.

A simple magnetic time machine can be made from a hubcap from a 1957 Ford and about 20,000 feet of copper wire. You will also need 15 magnets from car radio speakers. You take the magnets off of the speakers. They should be round with a hole in the middle like a dougnut. Stack all of the magnets on top of each other. Make a coil out of the wire and insert it into the center of the magnets. Hook up 12 1.5 volt D cells in series to the coil and point it toward the inside of the 1957 Ford hubcap. The rays that bounce out of the hubcap toward you will be at maximum focus about 4 feet away from the hubcap. If you stand at this point of focus you will vanish in about 3 minutes.

Try a project using simple levers. Also show how a pair of pliers is like a pair of opposed levers. Scissors also use a pivot and leverage but the opposite way pliers use leverage. In pliers the handles move a greater distance than the grips while for scissors the handles move a smaller distance than the blades. Good luck!
