i lived in turkey for two years a truly beautiful country..sleeveless shirts are fine. Istanbul is a very modern city.advice i can give is ---only drink bottled water, watch out for the toilets not all modern like home and some can be really nasty. take your own loo roll[trust me!] learn as much about prices they will charge more as your a tourist. haggle--it's fun.in peak time it can be really hot so take adequate protection. the men over there will try every thing to chat you up, there as sincere as president bush. don't if out on the night accept lifts or offeres of help dosn't happen often but take care of your own safety. the police are armed over there. it is very rude to point. enjoy all the lovely sights have a wonderful holiday you will have a great time.and bring back some great bargins[always check the lables as there are some knock offs]

yes, sleeveless shirts are ok in Istanbul, but short sleeve, not strapless or spagetti straps. I was there last summer and I wore shortsleeves because I could not deal with the heat. As a matter a fact, when I went to the mall and other stores, I was surprised to see that a lot of the clothing had short sleeves and some had spagetti straps too, but I have never seen anyone wearing spagetti straps out in the streets, maybe under their blouses I guess. If you go into the mosques, it is nice to show respect and dress decent, it can still be short sleeve blouse, but nothing hanging out and wear a head wrap and take off your shoe to enter the mosques. If you want to take pictures inside any religious places, get permission first. I did not see any women wearing shorts or mini skirts even though I have seen mini skirts in the mall too. I just wore long jeans and short sleeve blouse. Don't bother to take high heel shoes because a lot of the streets have brick stones rather than smoothe paved streets. Best not to take a lot of clothes because when you see the clothes in the mall, you want it all (smile). Enjoy!

Don't worry about your wearings in İstanbul. Particularly in downtown. Only you have to take your wallet in safe position. İstanbul is more secure than Rome off course. İt's a wonderful place believe me. I was live in istanbul for five years. I recommend you to take a seat at ORTAKÖY and watch bosphorus
