blue powder ear wash
Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited "folk remedy" which is highly effective in treating ear infections.

1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)
8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it's real cheap, but hard to find - try next to the Iodine at a Mom & Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)
4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)
Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) "spout" bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.

The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog's ears.

If you're treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.

The best thing to do is see a vet. Ear infections can be very serious resulting in hearing loss. If you choose not to see a vet you can put a little peroxide on a cotton ball & wipe ear as far as 2 fingers go in ear. DO NOT try & use q-tips in ear. Dogs ears are shaped different than ours & you may do serious damage. Also many pet stores sell ear cleaner. Try those, they help bring up the debris in the ear so it does not sit & fester. Most ear infection continue due to yeast or other organisms & must be treated with proper meds. Labs are known for ear infections & this will probably not be the last your dog will have!

Unless you contact a veterinary office to speak with them about the dog's condition, it is hard to determine whether it is an actual infection or simply a case of ear mites. Most reputatable veterinary offices will provide information over the telephone or internet. If it is an actual infection, antibiotics should be prescribed and even as directed. Sweet oil is sometimes effective for ear mites; however, it costs something to purchase it, too. Unless you have some on the shelf at home, I suggest that you call and speak with someone more qualified to help in the diagnosis of the symptoms.

If it is a site where a tick was removed, a small amount of antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin may prove effective.

My dog, had a horrible ear infection. It was so bad the vet said we might want to remove the inside of his one ear and get it sewn up. You really should take it to the vet, so it doesn't get worse. But if you really can't afford it than get ear cleaning wipes from the pet store and clean out its ears. It will be quite messy if the infection is bad. My dog's infection was so bad i went through half a tub of wipes on the one ear at one time. You will have to clean them out every other day, and avoid getting the ears wet. Do not allow your dog to lick his foot and stick it in his ear cause my dog constantly did that and it tore it up in side and the wounds could have gotten infected. If it itches a lot give it one benadryl in some peanut butter. The vet said we could use regular benadryl, and it worked well. The itching would stop within 30min and would last for a couple hours. You really need to go to the vet to get antibiotics, but since you can't, focus on cleaning it frequently so it has no chance to get worse. You may need to muzzle your dog, depending on how easily it lets you stick your finger in its ear. Do not allow it to scratch it at all, and keep it dry. Good luck, you will need it!

ok, i had a similar problem, peroxide is yes and no. I was told that by a vet. I would say use it if you have to for a week maybe two but go to the vet if it doesn't clear up. Which it may, but it also might come back.

my chow had a ear infection that got extremely bad and i did use peroxide and otc ear medicine. the vet couldn't even identify which bacteria it was, it was multi-strain. i got some ear wash and a strong anti bacterial med (all this less than a 100$, but was worth it when it got all better)

Don't put ANYTHING in your dogs ear until you find out what the problem is. If it is a bacterial infection, she needs antibiotics, if it is a fungal infection she needs an anti fungal. One does NOT work for the other. Do not flush or clean your dogs ears everyday! This only washes out the natural antibodies. After you find out what the underlying problem is, clean out the ear once and apply the medication, after that just apply the medication. When the dogs ear is healed be sure that each time she gets water in her ears (bathing or swimming) you use something to dry up the moisture. A dogs normal body temp is 101.5 to 102.5. Moisture + temp + no air in the canal due to floppy ears = infection. You can purchase something from your vet or use something like swimmers ear after being exposed to water in the ears.

My dog gets regular ear infections. I have to check her ears and clean the regularly. I use chlorhexiderm flush (its blue) works great for cleaning. then Use Tri-Otic, its an antibiotic ointment I get from the vet. The best thing is getting them to the vet, but I understand when money is tight or not available. Check with friends who have dogs, they may have meds left over from their visits. I live in Virginia if your close maybe I can help, have meds.

Not really, if there is an infection she needs medication. You can try an over the counter ear remedy but that won't kill any infection present. Ask your vet about a payment plan. If they don't have one they will know who in your area does. Please take your dog to the vet.

lab's are prone to yeast infections in their ears, if that's what it is use some Vaseline with a q-tip very gently and clean out her ears. Keep them as clean as possible with that until you can afford to bring her to the vets.
