Please tell me about the various oppurtunities available for both branches.Jobs, further studies,et al.Some people said that mechatronics is a narrow field for study at the undergrad level. Is this true? Also, does it incorporate topics of study of both electronics and mechanical engineering or just an overview of both.I'm just afraid that if it includes only overviews I'll end up not knowing both of them. Please tell me which branch is better.

I do not know in which country you live. Irrespective of that, Mechanica Engineering definitely have more scope in getting jobs in industries as well as in higher studies. Mechatronics is an inter-disciplinery subject and a good specilization for PhD. But for undergraduate or graduate studies, Mechanical is definitely the better option.

In undergraduate level in Mechanical Engg. you will be taught different branches of Mechanical Sciences: Fluidics, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Statics, Kinematics and Dynamics & Vibration of solid bodies and systems, Finite Element Analysis, Machining Science or Metal Cutting, Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Technology, Elementary Electronics, and many more. So when you go for higher studies you will have large number of fields to pursue the Masters. Further, you may get jobs in different positions in a large number of industries. What more do you want?

Remember the axiom which I believe:
No large-scale industry can survive without Mechanical Engineers. If you opt for Mechatronics then your scope of getting jobs become narrow.

Also, note that when you will apply for PhD then some one with a more general background as Mechanical Engg. will definitely be preferred over his competitor from Mechatronics.

As I am a final year student of Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering so I think I can give you the correct picture. I am from India. However, it would have been better had you mentioned your country.

As earlier told that mechanical Engineering is studying in genral with a large scope.

But specialsit are more now it cannot be discounted,

mechatronics is study related to instrumentation.

this is applicable to medical instrumentation, industrial instrumenation, embedded systems, real time systems, automatic data aquistion systems.

in pervasive computing, the future trend will certainly need mechatronics.

Mechanical engineering covers a broad amount of topics including electronics and mechanics. Electrical Engineering would be focused mainly on electronic concepts which are heavily based on mathematics - Although Mechanical is focused on mathematics as well.
