My puppy is alsmost a year old. Both my b/f and I work durring the day and dont feel right leaving the dog in a crate. However, everyday we get home, our house is trashed from him chewing everything. I have bought 10 pairs of flip flops in the past month, he chewed my boxspring apart, hes chewed up my carpet, hes chewed my tile up. Spankins and yelling is just not doing it anymore. I dont want to hook him outside cause we have other dogs that come in the yard. I also have another dog thats older that stays in the house with this one..... And Yes the puppy has plenty of chew toys that he wants nothing to do with!!!! HELP

Go to the store and buy "Apple Bitter" spray it on everything you dont want him to chew. It doesnt smell and has a bad taste for the dog. This worked wonders on the past 4 boxers we have had.

A puppy MUST chew as they are getting new teeth until they are 18 months. Additionally, most dogs will chew when left alone to alleviate boredom. Because you have to work all day, you put the puppy into an unfair situation. First, you should make sure the puppy is tired BEFORE you leave for work. A tired puppy means he won't be as bored. Use a backpack and water bottles to add to the pup's workout. Then he can rest comfortably during the day. I would also add that a crate is not unfair to the dog. A crate is a good tool to allow your puppy to be himself and for you to limit damage. It's not fair to leave him out all day and expect him to 'be good'. Most dogs actually love their crate and treat it as a den. For more good information on dogs, see the dog psychology center site http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/

Unfortunately, the only really good answer for when you're not at home is the crate. He's just going to continue to chew and destroy. Punishment is no good as dogs have short term memories for the bad things they have done. He doesn't understand why you're spanking him. How many times do you want to replace your flip flops, box spring, carpet, tile etc etc etc?
I have a small pup who also loves to chew but I'm able to barricade him in the kitchen. He managed to destroy a mat but I didn't bother to replace it and that's the only thing he was interested in....so far. Good Luck.

he's bored, try a 'safe' room if you don't want to crate. try walking him before you leave so you leave a tired pooch who will sleep most of the day as well. If these don't work you might have to crate.
for my dog of 1yr. when i catch him chewing on a bad item 'furniture' i stop him, "no", if he goes back to it, a firm "NO", then i offer a toy until he takes it and pet him. enforcing. As for items when he runs with them, once i catch him i take the item, with a "no" then i will wave it infront of his face, if he goes for it i tell him 'no' with a tap on the nose if a 'no' doesn't work, i may or may not do that again depending on how excite he was about it then i do the toy thing, same as before, waggle it infront of until he takes it and reward him by petting him.
if you are not home you have to put him someplace he won't do this behavior while you are gone, or he will learn if you don't see him do it then it is ok.

again spicy food doesn't always work to stop behavior. i have a chow mix that increased a bad behavior when item was sprinkled with it.

sounds like he needs to be kenneled during the day if he can't control his chewing compulsion. I would also consider buying some chewing spray that tastes like really sour apple (they sell it at all pet stores and probably Wal-Mart) and spraying it on a few things that you know he usually goes for. after getting a taste of that a couple of times, he may not want to chew anymore.

You could get a squirt bottle, squirt him in the face, then send him or her outside. Or you can take him around the house, show him what he's chewed up, then yell bad dog.

Sprinkle pepper or hot sauce on things he normally chews. That should convince him to stop. If it tastes bad, or is uncomfortable, he'll get the message.

well if it's that bad then you should him in a crate in the day. if he's crate trained then it should be bad to leave him in the crate. you shouldn't feel bad. Good luck with you're dog.
