An echo is generally not caused by another party using a speakerphone feature during the conversation. The typical problems with this include hollow sound and cutting in and out of the voice.
An echo has everything to do with going from a two wire handset system to a four wire transmission. Phone companies must use costly echo cancellation equipment. When this equipment is not working properly or non-existent as in some non-US countries, an echo may exist. Overseas phone calls are also subject to this need for echo cancellors in addition to an annoying delay.
As far as crosstalk being a problem between closely placed wires...this is usually a non-issue for the wires are all shielded -- at least in the US. If they were not shielded, and mutual coupling existed, the capacitance and inductance would not likely cause a delay and partial termination, resulting in an echo. Rather, this situation would cause some of the power to be transferred between the lines...you might hear another faint call on your line, and your voice would be fainter to the recipient.
In summary...echos are a result of a poor or nonexistent echo cancellor with the phone company.
Hope this helps.

most likely this was a poor connection and you were connected over a cirduit that had an unbalanced repeater. This is not that uncommon and hard to trace when reported to the local telco. You would have to report the number you called or were called by and the date and time of the call. If this call was out of state the route could be via many different ways.
Bottom line: Probably not a speakerphone and certainly not your phone.

If the echo is immediate then you're on speaker. If there's a couple second delay there's probably a bad connection.

That echo can be caused by a problem in the line. I experience that quite frequently with my best friend. Neither one of us has a speaker phone.
It could be caused by a speakerphone too...but it doesn't occur as often as when there are problems in the line itself.
As for if he is lying or if you are paranoid, you need to figure that out based on his character.
Good luck

sometimes a bad/crossed line could lead to this. It's not always due to speaker phone and if there's a good second or 2 delay it's definately NOT a speakerphone

I agree with everyone that it is either a speakerphone or a bad connection with either one of your phones, but I also would like to add that I've experienced that when being recorded. Just an idea...

I hate being on speaker phone also. Sometimes you can get a bad connection that causes an echo. Also if you are calling from a cell phone it can have an echo.

yes for sure you are on speaker phone.. I dislike the speaker phone also. When not on speaker phone your voice is clear and you do not have an echo coming back at you...My daughter does that to me from time to time when I am talking to her and I just tell her to turn it off before I will even speak to her... hope this helps
