Birds that have not been tamed are caught in the wild. A home bred bird is better as a pet because it is happier to be around people. A wild born bird has come from a giant flock into a small cage in your house. It will never be a happy, relaxed pet.
It costs people time and money to breed and raise birds properly. They are that price because thats how much people figure their time and expertise are worth. Offer a home to a rescue instead.

You could put a notice in the paper. Someone may be willing to part with their pet.

Sadly often, people get birds like that because they are pretty, but then realize they are a great investment. I don't mean financially; large hookbilled parrots can live as long as humans so it's just like having a new family member who is permanently stuck at the two-year-old developmental level.

Really, spending a couple hundred quid is a tiny investment. The fewer people the better, really! It's far more important to have a stable, loving and understanding home environment for decades to come, and this is a hard thing to find.

It sounds like maybe you are not in the States. If you are in the USA, it is best to go to a Bird Show where they have babies right up to full grown birds for sale. Or attend a meeting at a Bird Club, where birds are also sold. By going to either of these two places, you get to meet the Breeder & can ask all questions you need answered. African Grays will run around $700.00-$800.00 each & not the $1,500.00 as you find in a Pet Store & they know nothing about them there. Good Luck !

How much is too much? Around here (FL) they can be as cheap as $500 from a breeder. Breeders usually sell for a lot less than pet shops and are more reliable when asking questions about the bird. Check your local newspaper classifieds for local breeders.

Maybe you could try a local animal shelter.
I believe they sometimes get parrots etc. given to them when owners go into elderly care homes, die or cannot look after them for whatever reason.
Some of these birds may be slightly elderly themselves & need a good home to live out their lives.

have you tried one of the bird rescue groups? find a bird rescue shelter in your area and contact them and they can steer you in the right direction.
