one word - why?

Why does one object fall faster?
Why does water freeze at 32 deg. ?
Why does a ball roll downhill, but a brick doesn't?

This teaches the child to question, form a hypothesis, test that hypothesis, analyse the results, and reformulate the hypothesis (if needed)

Hmmm...there are so many things you can do experiments to prove, but too many of them need equipment that may not be easy to get to.

One easy one that can be tested and measured the effect of gravity and as a confound, air resistance.

Get a bunch of different sized balls that have different densities and masses, have the kids drop them simultaneously and record if they hit at the same or different times. Then add objects with similar masses but different shapes (ball bearing and index card comes to mind - weigh them to show masses similar) and show they take different times to hit.

Then ask why that is...

If you really want to get at the answer, see if you can figure out a way to involve a vacuum bell in the experiment :P

Have them ask "Does the weight of an object affect how fast it falls from a height?" (Many are surprised to learn that it does not!)
Form a hypothesis.
Gather materials. (Control the variables--balls of the same size but different weights--pool balls, tennis balls, styrofoam balls, etc.)
Do the experiment. Run several trials.
Collect data and organize into charts, graphs, etc.
Draw conclusions. Was the hypothesis supported?
Develop new questions and new hypothesis to test.
