I am designing a dock fora public warehouse project and the standard advices a maximum slope of 6% for the driveway to the dock. So, how much must I excavate? What would be the slope in degrees? Check this link for the standard in spanish http://www.lomag-man.org/quais%20plateautable/kelleydockplanningstandardsspanish.pdf

The driveway for the truck to the dock would be about 21,5 metres. I mean, about the length of a long-haul truck.

A 6% SLOPE IS ONE THAT FOR EVERY 100 UNITS, IT GOES DOWN 6 UNITS. IF MY RAMP IS 100 INCHES LONG (ON THE HORIZONTAL) THEN THE DROP IS 6 INCHES. GOT IT? THAT IS A SMALL ANGLE, OF COURSE. THE WAY YOUE GET THE ANGLE IS TO DIVIDE THE RISE (6) BY THE HORIZONTAL RUN (100) AND TAKE THE INVERSE TANGENT (YOU HAVE TO USE A CALCULATOR)---IF YOU DO THAT FOR YOUR RAMP, YOU PUNCH IN ".06" THEN DO THE INVERSE TANGENT AND YOULL GET ABOUT 3.5 DEGREES. IN ORDER TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO EXCAVATE, YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH DIRT YOU HAVE THERE TO BEGIN WITH (I DONT KNOW THAT)...BUT START WITH YOUR SLOPE FIRST

Mathematically speaking, slope is the "rise over run", or the change in y divided by the change in x. In otherwords, it's the change in height divided by the surface distance change. The variable for slope is m.
For a slope of 6%, you'll want your rise/run ratio to be equal to .06 (multiplying by 100 gives you the 6%). So if you know the length of your driveway, (use a little algebra here), plug that length in for change of x, and solve backwards for y.
(.06 * length of driveway) = the height difference in the top of the driveway and the bottom of the driveway.
I hope this helps?

The slope is the change of height with respect to the change in horizontal distance. A 6% slope would be a 6 foot rise over a 100 foot run.

A 6% slope means that the rise of the slope is 6% of the distance under consideration. For instance, a rise of 6cm over a distance of 100cm.
A bit of trigonometry gives the angle to be about 3.4º

how long is the driveway? 6 percent grade or slope is like a change of 6 meters in elevation over a hundred meters of distance. thats what it means.

If you want to translate that into degrees, take the inverse tan of the ratio of rise to run. In this case, a 6% slope = inv tan(6 / 100). It's approximately 3.43 degrees, mas o menos.
For your situation, you would want a maximum (vertical) rise of 21.5 * 0.06 = 1.29 meters for your (horizontal) run of 21.5 meters.
