Both I think, you know how they say a smile is contagious. By smiling at that stranger you might have had a positive affect on their life. Wearing a smile supposedly lifts your spirits and puts you in a better mood.

We do this just to keep the "act" up....it's not "nice" to answer with TERRIBLE when someone is asking you how your day is going. My GOSH what would people do if we came back with a unconventional answer?? ha ha ha They would probably flip!!!
Sometimes I daydream about saying something really off the wall and shocking the he** out of them. The thing is....I would be flattered if someone answered me with a "not so good" once in awhile and then filled me in a little as to how their life is going...but that's just me....I think if you would take a poll....most people out there could give two sh*ts less about anyone else's life.....it's sad but true...that's why I like this site so much...because for the most part...the people on this site DO care...otherwise why would they spend their time answering in such great detail sometimes? I'm constantly struggling with my inner thoughts....day in and day out....isn't it sad how much we do this? I try to tell myself that none of the problems I have matter anyway because in the end I'll just be dead.....ha ha ha but that doesn't always work.
I think that a lot of people just go through life on autopilot and they are so concerned about getting to the next thing on the list that they have to do that they pass up so many things....how sad...I hope I NEVER get this way...you miss so much beauty in the world and you'll never be able to get that time back...it's gone....LIVE while you can and live it up Good!!!!!
Have a Happy Day!

We do it for everyone. It is some for the other person...it feels nice to be smiled at when you're having a bad day. We smile for ourselves...it releases feel good seritonin just the act of smiling. When I was in school we had a teacher that made everyone smile in class, if you weren't busy writing you should be smiling. No one ever had any problems in her calss and she never seemed in a bad mood. We all have thoughts going on in our heads constantly, but we must remember to be of good spirit because the alternantive is a bad spirit and who would want that. Best wishes

We do this because we are scared of our own emotions. We don't want people to see us vulnerable, we want to look stable. I was doing this same thing recently (for about a year to be exact) after I broke up with my boyfriend. I was hurt and I missed him really bad. We stopped speaking to eachother after the break up and after about 6 months he got a new girlfriend. It hurt a lot but I still smiled on the outside when I saw him. I never confessed to anyone that I still liked him a lot and that I missed him..Well, thats all in the past now, thank God I moved on and I am so much happier now. But do you see my point? Sometimes people have to fake their happiness to achieve happiness.

we don't want people to know our problems or what's bothering us. So we put on a fake smile and act like nothing's wrong.

Pride we want everything to be ok on the outside, also fear of what they might think if they knew of our inner struggles.
