Because in the 70's & 80's your parents ruined it for you. It's quite simple... During that period, a LARGE number of alcohol related fatalites were noticed on and around college campuses due to the immaturity of the 18-21 crowd so they raised the drinking age to help cut down and give police more power to make arrests. Although drinking in frat parties by underage people is still quite prevelant, it's quite drawn back from the "Animal House" days.

As far as the military goes, another simple answer... Your body will mature before your mind does. And the military typically doesn't want the Enlisted members to have a "strong mind" because it's easier to spread the military philosophies and trainings.

That's a rhetorical question. And "berr" isn't a word. Plus, it's not like it matters how old you are; I know people who are younger than sixteen that can handle alcohol better than their own parents, and with a fake ID, they can buy it too. It's just a matter of the government having control of the children so that less people get killed in drunk driving accidents. I'm not saying that adults DON'T drive drunk, believe me, I know they do, but let's face it, kids are irresponsible. We (and I say this as a 15-year-old) can't even be trusted to grow up properly and listen to what our parents have to say. We skip class, run away from home, date 25-year-old perverts on the Internet, and you want them to trust us with something that's going to cloud your brain and pickle your liver? I don't think so. Now, I'm not pretending to be straight-edge or anything, my mom lets me drink at my parties and such, as long as I remain at the house, where she can keep an eye on me. But look at all those kids who have been going to grad parties, getting drunk, and trying to drive home and then wind up killing people. Here in North Carolina, we've had several drunk driving incidents where some kid went to a party, got drunk, then tried to drive the WRONG WAY down the interstate. Looking at this, I don't think that I would trust a kid with booze and a three-thousand pound killing machine. That's just moronic.

And I know, you're saying, "Well look at all the adults who do the same thing!" Yeah, adults can be stupid too, but the point is that we can't eliminate alcohol (just look at what happened when they tried in the '20's) but we can eliminate some of the fatalities by putting a limit on how much to drink, and how old you have to be to drink it.

Oh, and by the way, dying for you country and dying in a drunk driving accident are two VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. At least when you die for your country you die with honor and not with piss in your pants and vomit stains on your shirt because you couldn't make it to the bathroom in time because you were so drunk you stumbled halfway there and fell and couldn't get up.

It shouldn't be that away. In louisianna, the laws state that you can drink in the presence of your parents if they buy it for you at the age of 18. You can also be inside a bar but you can't buy a drink. To me if your considered an adult and you pay taxes and you can inlist in the service you should be able to purchase alcohol. The government has taking control to give states federal funding for state roads and highways as an incentive to raise the drinking age. Other factors include M.A.D.D. and public awareness safety issues. To me it's all about how responsable you as a person are willing to be.

Good point. You shouldn't be able to die for your country until you are 21. No one should die before tasting their first beer!

Because a lot of 18 year old are not mature enough, and they go drink then drive. A LOT of people are killed by drunk drivers. I lost my cousin who was 17 because a drunk driver hit her so I know what it feels like to lose someone to a drunk driver, and I understand that drinking and driving is wrong. Teenagers have messed up brains.

They do not care about you dying in war. They care about you driving drunk and killing other people over here. Most people that are 18 are not mature enough to handle themselves when they are in an intoxicated state. But plenty of 18 year olds can do push-ups and shoot a gun.

Physically you can handle serving your country. Mentally you can't handle drinking beer....but there are some people over 21 that can't handle it either.

The eating age became 18 right here in my state at one time. it sort of feels that a decrease eating age makes it greater trouble-free for even youthful human beings to get there palms on alcohol in assessment to whilst it is 21. whilst i became in the US military on the greater youthful age of 18, alcohol became legally offered to those that have been 18, 19 and 20. ON base. The coverage became beer and wine basically no no longer trouble-free stuff. yet i might desire to nonetheless get any form of alcohol if i desired to get it. existence regarded plenty greater useful in the army if i did no longer use alcohol.
