Some atheists feel that references to God go against the freedom of religion expressed in the bill of rights. Like all religions atheism seems to want to impose their views on others. I don't really care unless people are made to say that part of the pledge when they don't believe it.

Nobody asked that the pledge be removed from schools, only that the words "under god" be removed.
Did you know that the pledge of allegiance was written in 1892 by a christian minister, and did NOT include "under god" in it?
That those words were only added in 1954 by congress in the middle of the "godless communist" cold war?
That change took the pledge from a pledge of allegiance to the equivalent of a public prayer. Since our constitution specifies that the government should stay out of the business of religion, the words should indeed be removed officially.

The ignorance of Americans is amazing. I'm Canadian and I know your country's history better than you do.
The US pledge, as it was written in 1892, DID NOT contain the offensive phrase "under god". That obscenity was added in 1954 at the behest of the knights of Columbus in a move that can only be described as anti-Soviet rhetoric.
To the mentally deficient or willfully dishonest, pay attention: Michael Newdow does not want the pledge removed from schools. Rather, he wants Francis Bellamy's pledge spoken the way Bellamy wrote it in 1892.
Any other claim is ignorance or a lie.

Just the part about "under god" Since we are a nation of many beliefs. Why intentionally cause divisiveness right after saying "one nation" it is hypocritical and was only added to the pledge during the cold war scare to keep the delicate balance of control in place.
Remember the government's sole purpose is to maintain status quo. Anything threatening to upset that, must and will be counterbalanced at all cost.

because the phrase "Under God" is in the Pledge of Allegiance and athiests deny the existence of a divine being. they believe kids in school who are not being raised in a religious household should not be made to recite a pledge that includes a phrase acknowledging the existence of a divine power. also, many of them think it violates the freedom of religion clause in our constitution. the separation of church and state is at the heart of this issue, and many athiests would like to see secular amendments made to national traditions, such as reciting the pledge of alligiance.

For the land of Israel lies empty and broken after your attacks, but the LORD will restore its honor and power again. Shields flash red in the sunlight! The attack begins! See their scarlet uniforms! Watch as their glittering chariots move into position, with a forest of spears waving above them. The chariots race recklessly along the streets and through the squares, swift as lightning, flickering like torches. The king shouts to his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses. But too late! The river gates are open! The enemy has entered! The palace is about to collapse! Nineveh's exile has been decreed, and all the servant girls mourn its capture. Listen to them moan like doves; watch them beat their breasts in sorrow. Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir! The people are slipping away. "Stop, stop!" someone shouts, but the people just keep on running. Loot the silver! Plunder the gold! There seems no end to Nineveh's many treasures – its vast, uncounted wealth. Soon the city is an empty shambles, stripped of its wealth. Hearts melt in horror, and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling. (Nahum 2:2-10 NLT)

Atheists don't believe in God, so in the pledge of allegiance, when one says it you pledge yourself under god, for it says "one nation under god" and the truth be told, since they don't believe in God they feel that the pledge is violating their rights, they however forget that they are a minority and that many of our fore fathers were believers of a God, so they included God in the foundation of this country.

Probably because of the 'under god' part. Personally, I find state oriented brainwashing just as offensive as religious brainwashing. The pledge has no business in public schools even if the 'under god' part were removed.
