Sucking fingers or thumbs is a self-soothing thing. It is completely mental. It is sort of like the little kid who takes a certain blanket or stuffed animal with him everywhere. 4 is a good age to teach other methods of self soothing. Try parenting.com for some helpful advice. They also have blogs with many mothers who can offer ideas and advice.

my 2 and a half year old son does the same thing. The doctor told me all the bitter or hot stuff doesn't work. Also, a 3 year old girl where I live in California died, when her mother put cheyene chili powder on her daughters hands to get her to stop sucking her fingers. The little girl choked on and it make her throat swell shut. SO DON'T TRY IT. Just give him time, when school starts and no other kids do it, he will stop too.

This place where I found solution to my son who is thumb sucking also has a device for kids who suck their fingers. It's called the Fingerguard. I am sure it will work wonders like it did to thumb suckers as well. My son was hardcore thumbsucker since birth too and I manage to break his habit in just 2 1/2 weeks! Good luck ;-)

I agree with the yucky taste suggestions. But it really would be best to get him to stop soon - I don't know about fingers, but I know that thumb sucking can lead to an overbite...

My husband had this problem until he was 8! (His parents tell me!)
They tried everything, dipping his hands in vinegar, they even put an appliance in his mouth that was supposed to poke his fingers!
Really nothing worked until my husband decided he was going to stop! (He is really stubborn tho! lol)
try the vinegar, they have nail polish (clear) that you put on the nails that tastes really bad, and is supposed to help them stop!
Good Luck!

Anyone who says to put something gross on his fingers is being unreasonable. No parent would want to see that happen to their child.

It'll go away with time, as school starts do you think he'll want his classmates to see him sucking on his two fingers? Give it time. Meanwhile, you just discourage it verbally.

put something yucky on his fingers , like hot sauce. They make a product that taste bitter, just for this situation.
