Why do my cats urine smell like amonia?

Ok why does it stink like amonia? Everytime I go to clean it, my eyes burn and the smell is so overpowering. What does this mean, and can I do anything to prevent it. I have already tried every litter at the pet store. And both cats are neutered. HELP!!!!!

All cat's urine smells like ammonia. It's not just yours. How often do you change their litter box? Litter boxes with very little litter smell less than those with a lot. So reduce the ammount of litter and try to change it twice a day.

All cat urine has an ammonia smell to it. However if the (or even just one of them) is dehydrated, or has kidney disease it will make the urine more concentrated and thus have a much stronger odor to it.

I would first take them to vet and have blood work done if you haven't recently had any done. If things come back normal, there is a cat litter that you cannot buy in stores it is called Litter Mate. Check out the website www.littermate.com. It's an all natural cat litter and it really is amazing.

Well Ammonia is present in all urine. If you don't clean out the litter box often, you will get a strong smell of ammonia. But, if you are cleaning the box regularly, the strong smell could mean your cat isn't processing things right, and this could be very dangerous. I would take your cat to the vet as soon as possible.

All urine does - even YOURS. You just don't normall smell it because you flush it down the toilet!

"Deamination" is the removal of an amine group from a molecule. In the human body, deamination takes place in the liver. It is the process by which amino acids are broken down. The amino group is removed from the amino acid and converted to ammonia. The rest of the amino acid is made up of mostly carbon and hydrogen, and is recycled or burned for energy. Ammonia is toxic to the human system, and enzymes convert it to urea or uric acid by addition of carbon dioxide molecules. Urea and uric acid can safely diffuse into the blood and then be excreted by the kidney in the urine. Certain foods and digestic bacteria can cause an odor in urine, but absent that urine is virtually odorless. However, as urine sits (as in a litterbox) the molecules in the urine break down and ammonia is released.

Moral of the story is - clean your litterbox often. Try a clumping, scoopable litter.

Try the naturaul litter. It looks like wood pellets. Its flushable as well which is a plus if you can figure out a clean way to get it there. But it's the litter thats causing the ammonia smell. We have had many cats ( way too many at times) and if we didn't clean out the box everyday the litter/ pee would reak of ammonia. I don't know what the manufacters put in it, but I wish they wouldn't!

Cat urine smells of ammonia because that is what is in it. A cat's meat-heavy diet is the cause of their urine smelling like this, and you can't change their diet because they won't survive on a meatless diet.

If at all possible, let your cats go to the toilet outside - it doesn't smell if they go in the flowerbed or wherever.

It shouldn't smell like that, what do they eat?
Have you checked their breath? What does that smell like? As Amonia on the breath can mean a number of things.

All cats urine has that smell. It only gets as bad as you describe if you don't clean out the litter box enough. Try more then one litter box or try sprinking box with baking soda when you clean out the waste. Try to scoop out the waste every other day.
