I would NEVER verbally assault a cashier, but that's just me. I would definitely help the cashier and guide her to the product I want.
I have worked retail and customers can get rude - if not down right obnoxious.
What I did when some customer bit my head off (for no reason) was to turn the tables - I think of what I would do if I was having the worst day of my life and how I would react in a similar situation.
Sometimes ya just gotta grin & bear it. Remember, as a cashier, it is your job to keep the customer satisfied.
If you let people get to you - you're the one who is going to suffer. Believe me, when that customer walks out the door they don't care if they hurt you.
Then again, you can always hope they step in a big pile of dog s**t on the way home :)
uh huh - I bet you're smiling now!

I would never make such a comment--that customer was just rude. I spent many years working in retail, and just ended my "retail career" in March. During that time I dealt with a lot of rude, obnoxious people, and it's sad, really. Some people just assume that if you're standing behind a cash register, you must be an idiot and treat you as such. I think every person in the world should have to work at least one holiday season in the retail industry, and then maybe they'd be a little more polite and understanding.

I'd be happy to help.
You can always tell which cashiers smoke, and which don't, by how easily they get a cigarette order right. To people who don't smoke, all those little boxes look pretty much alike, I imagine!
I see no reason, whatsoever, to be mean about it.
I appreciate it when clerks ask me, "Is this right?" without giving me an attitude because I smoke, and care whether I get hard or soft pack, 100's or not, menthol or regular, etc.
It is not a crime or an insult to unfamiliar with types and brands of cigarettes! :-))

I would not do comment like this to a cashier. Meanwhile I think at the very least cashier should learn some info about items most often sold. I was purchasing material in craft store and sales person was asking me:"How long is yard? Is that equivalent of foot?"

Your doing the right thing, some people are just plain rude and stupid like rude people lol You sound young and will learn in time, just how much time is up to you. I am not a smoker but don't think there is all that much to learn about smokes. And you don't have to smoke to learn (don't start smoking) Keep up the good work and help others the best way you can you will feel good about yourself

People should not be rude to you. A hard pack comes in a box and a soft pack is only wrapped in the labeling package and cellophane. You can tell really easily because the hard pack has corners that will not mush when you touch them.

I would preface my interaction with them with a simple statement like, "I am not familiar with cigarettes, what color pack is that? Did you want 100's?"
When a customer is rude, your simple reply to questions like the above would be, "I am not a smoker, I am sorry I am not familiar with your brand." Smile, smile and smile some more, then wish them a good day. If they insist on being rude, inform your boss. You don't need to be abused by others, paying or not!

I wouldn't take it to heart. I worked part time as a cashier while I was a student and I had more people be rude to me then, than I have in the rest of my entire life. Just be secure in the knowledge that you are a better person than them!

Well, since the hard/soft pack thing is pretty basic.... I always thought that in order to sell a product, one should at least know something about it. Do you want to go to Circuit City and ask for a fire wire and have them ask you what it is?

They are very rude. Tell them just ask for the brand and not a whole load of rubbish like soft or hard .
