Dark brown leather furniture and room is to have a warm, cozy feel. Not too traditional but not too contemporary.

Here's a trick that will do wonders in finding complimentary colors for your room. Find an article; for instance, a towel, a piece of wallpaper, a painted plate, a piece of fabric, a piece of art or a framed painting that attracts and has the colors you are wanting to use. It will be coordinate for you. Just pick out your room color and 2-3 other contrasting colors from the article. it makes it so much easier in trying to do a room.

The warm tan walls are very neutral, so just about anything will go with them. I would not paint red on trim or windows, as it would be hard to repaint in the future. But use the reds in accent articles like fabric slipcovers and such. I used a chinese plate to plan my living room. The wall color is the palest blue, white trim, red sofa and medium colored woods. I also have black tables with oriental accents throughout. It all came from a nice painted plate and looks beautiful.

A combination of teal (not turquise, it's too light) blue and dark mustard yellow would look great! Those are the colors in a wool zumi rug I purchased years ago. I also put together a pumpkin color and a cobalt blue that would add some punch. A light toned sage green and gold combination would work in softening up the darker colors. You might consider looking at area rugs and how the color combinations work together. Many times, the right rug serves to pull the whole look together. Good Luck. Sounds like a great start...love the red with the leather sofa color!

I think the red would scream out too much. Try a pastel color with your tan. Focus on the furniture then look at your tan wall (or think of your tan wall if not painted). Now... what would fall great in between? Sometimes little color samples from home depot or lowes can help you capture that perfect blend. Try you'll see.
I have the similar setting, but I went with a charcoal for trim.

gold and burnt orange. at least stay in the warm palette. i painted my walls a deep, dark sand/adobe color. then i painted the wall behind my bed in rich red and used gold and orange glaze for a beautiful faux finish that reminds one of a mica lampshade w light spilling through. it highlighted the bed marvelously. although this was in my bedroom, i have brown leather furniture and a warm, cozy feeling to the house. my work of art was oohed and awed over. (i sold the house, sure miss that room!)

Yellows. May I suggest the Behr paint machine at Home Depot. It will give you about 10 options in cool, warm, etc. You can even put a fabric sample in its little laser and have it scan it and find matching/complementing colors for decorating. Behr.com also can do they color combos but it runs a bit slow as its alot of over whelming Flash media.

It depends on what type of modern look you're going for. I would personally go for a warm beige, or something neutral along those lines. That leaves it open for a versatile look (i.e. versus purple, green, blue, etc). If you want something a little more bold, I would say black. Good color scheme by the way!

since tan is neutral, you need to work with the red, green would compliment it, although to keep it from looking Christmas, you should go with a neutral green like sage. The other color I would go with would be a brown, a half shade lighter than your couch.

Of course you will have to get swatches and check it out for yourself.....

black for style. or taracotta orange. both leaves you or guest with the taste of style. to me black gives off power, boldness, seductive. taracotta gives off inviting, warm, and cozy. with dark furniture i would do the color sage.
