You can pick the best school in town by newspaper reports, online sites, and word of mouth, but its still your job to followup on your childs education. You'll have the best teacher one year and the worst the next. If you make time for your child to help with homework and issues from their day, your child will get the most out of the education process. I always followup with a few extra worksheets on homework days. I like to think that its a combination of public school and home-schooling. I believe in supporting public schools, but think that children can always use a little extra one-on-one with their parents.

Five things to look for in a good preschool.
1. A weekly curriculum posted in clear view of parents/visitors.
2. A low child to teacher ratio. 12 to 1 is legal for PreK but not effective.
3. Open door policy, meaning parents can drop by to visit their child anytime without calling first.
4. Nutritious homestyle meals and a posted menu.
5. Sounds of laughter and encouraging verbal interactions from teachers to students

I would first ask around to fellow friends that have children and ask them what they like about their school and what their children like best. Then i would take that information and visit different schools and talk, ask questions, gather information on the different schools- like what is there policy on discipline, do they have a certain way they do things. Things along that nature. I would even go as far as to ask to sit in on a class to see how the teachers or volunteers interact with the kids.

Most of your responses seemed good. As a teacher I can tell you that a best school for one may not be the best school for another. Ultimately it is what happens at home that will make the most difference. Stay involved as much as you can.

1) Ask other parents around your neighborhood/town what preschool they chose and why.
2) Preschools have different philosphys some are education based, some are for socialization and creative play. What does your child need?
3) There is a questionaire for preschool/teacher interview on babycenter.com that is helpful to print out.
4) Make an appointment and visit your choices.

There are many resources available that rank colleges and universities US News (www.usnews.com), Princeton Review, Peterson's (www.petersons.com). It depends on what you are looking for, strength in a specific field, a good social scene, a great value - but those guides are very informative.
Additionally, go talk to career counselors or guidance counselors - they are usually swamped with materials and talk to recruiters all the time - they'll know good programs.

I think you should go check out a couple of places. Don't be affried to ask question. See if the other kids are happy by there exspections and see what kind of things they are doing with the kids. It helps when you get a tour. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Get advice from parents in town who have kids that go to the different schools. They would be the best judges.
