Investigate is a BIG word... in what aspect? For civil / criminal history, most of our states (if not all) have websites you can search by name. You can also research some public records through the same official databases (i. e., property assessors, marriages, deaths). Then there is the ever famous "unclaimed property" website to see if who you are investigating has any money owed to them - often addresses are provided. Then there are directories, etc... or you could just hire a professional according to what you are attempting to learn. If you are a novice be careful - while you are investigating someone you sometimes leave "traces" that lead back to you and then you will have someone investigating YOU... not always a fun thing. Good Luck.

I am a private investigator and one site that helps me find free information is the blackbook online and searchsystems.net. They direct you to sites that are free, and the local agencies that provide public information. Sometimes it is free, sometimes not. Some 'record holders' such as city and county criminal records, may charge a fee. When you reach a 'wall' and don't know where to go, that is when you hire a private investigator. As professionals they know of more creative ways to get information.
