My winzip has expired and I was using the free version. Is there another one where I can download it for free and use it? I do not want to buy winzip.

Winrar it's a good option.
It can compress to winrar and winzip files. It also can decompress a several number of others formats.
The trial version last for 30 days but you still can compres / decompress files after the trial period has expired. You'll only have to deal with a annoying start window that encourage you to buy a license.

You can also stop using windows explorer and start using Total Commander. Not only it can replace it but it can also decompres several types of compressed files formats and can compress to winzip files.

And you don't have to buy Winzip. I also do not like the included utility with Windows XP. My personal preference is Izarc, http://www.izarc.org/ but others seem to like 7zip, http://www.7-zip.org/ you can pick the one you like best but in my opinion you cannot beat Izarc.
