More money equals better education. In California before then Govener Ronald Regan, took office California spent the most money on its student and as a result had the highest rank in education based on state. When Regan took office he cut education to the point our state never recovered.
It is an investment. With better funding we could have had Preschool for all. the benifits are well doumented and is a great investment but again politics.

The system is fine, we need money to buy new buildings hire more teachers, recruit the best minds, best books, pay for after school programs and meals.

The only thing the system needs is more parent involment and participation.

Children are an investment.
but politics have short changed them.

The funding that is already going into the school systems needs to reach the classrooms. There are many improvements that can be made in the classrooms that would help encourage students to learn and give overworked teachers a helping hand. The solution is not however to throw more money at the problem, but to make the existing funding accessible. And those whose job it is to "parcel it out" responsible for the final outcome. The school district where I live recently lost 70 million dollars. No, they didn't lose a grant, they just can't remember what they did with the money. If they were held accountable for the money, maybe they wouldn't lose it.

By better, I assume you mean more funding. The answer is no. Throwing more money at a problem seldom solves the problem satisfactorily. The solution is to find the root cause of the problem. In this case, it is my opinion that the amount of time and effort that parents and grandparents have to put forth to make a decent living has caused them to lack the energy and the time to adequately assist in the education of their children. The educational system is capable of teaching but the mindset of the students and the parents has to change. Learning is a job just like any other work. Teaching is a career requiring a focused dedication that is seldom appreciated by those who need to learn. The teacher can be the best in the world at providing the knowledge and the opportunity to learn. However, the primary focus here is to remember the it is the Students JOB to GET an Education, not the Teachers Job to GIVE you one.

As an educator I can tell you that the system is in need of a makeover. The current levy system does not support the needs of today's schools. Districts continue to fail levys, which denies students in that district the same opportunities as students in the more affluent districts. Nationally, the government is taking away funding from schools who do not pass AYP--even if these schools have an overall passing percentage for the entire district! Then funding system, along with the "ranking" system, need to be completely overhauled.

The system needs over hauled to meet individual student needs. Yes Laura Bush has a good theory "with no child left behind" but again there are to many variables to make it picture perfect.

I have a 15 y/o son in PA who is a special needs student, he has been placed in a Life skills class level, I sit watching his rubic numbers and reading skills plummet. I have expressed my feelings with the IEP team and of course their reply is its my imagination. I work at home with him and I hear that's not how my teacher does it. And just this past year did I finally get him the opportunity to take the special needs state test, prior to last year the state expected him to act like a 8th grader for one day when his levels are in 3rd and 4th grade.

So with my personal experience it is the system that needs the over haul not necessarily funding but like the rest of the world MONEY is the route...Our planet does not revolve on the imaginary axis any more but the almighty dollar!

Well, living in the land of education cuts, I vote for makeover. I've been substitute teaching for many years in several school districts. The districts that pass budget increases can afford to hire enough teachers and not cut programs, but there's still something missing.

I don't feel that the system is necessarily at fault. I feel that good education and study practices start in the individual home. You can lead a kid to homework but you can't make them do it.
