If we need more troops to fight this war, then why not put immigrants in english classes, and have them serve for four years? This country was made on people fighting for freedom, why not give them a chance to fight for theirs? Their immediate family can live here while they serve, and be classified as citizens if anything were to happen to the one serving. Now granted I know this is a melting pot, and I get pissed every time I have to press 1 for English, but I think this is a proposition that could help both problems. After they get out of the military they will know english alot better and have a pretty good chance of getting a good job, and I think that would help the economy alot. Just a thought.

You actually have a great idea. Make the Mexican immigrants join our military, and then have them guard the border against other Mexicans.

That is a good idea but not the only one. Some might not be able to serve due to age or health problems. Also, it seems kind of like blackmail - serve and fight in our war or get kicked out. I do think, however that they should open up that option for any willing illegal immigrant and reward them with immediate legal status.

I think that is a good idea. It allows those who are really dedicated to being part of the country, to show it and be rewarded for it.

It would probably be hard to enforce, just like the current laws with immigration are hard to enforce.

The other issue is, how would the US look if they are sending thousands and thousands of immigrants to die at war? It might start an international frenzy.... but I do think there is merit to the idea.

Here in Canada we've been 'pressing 1 for English' for about 20 years, not to mention every single sign/label/etc must be bilingual. It's not really that bad!

It sounds fine in theory, but we have one of the most educated highly trained armies in the world. You can't just take someone who doesn't speak English, teach them the language, train them and integrate them into our armed forces in a efficient manner. The army turns away high school graduates inside the U.S. who have had 12 yrs of schooling and still aren't qualified to fill many positions. I also don't like the message it could be sending that we are hiring "mercenary soldiers" because the people in this county aren't willing to sacrifice their children for a unnecessary war. In the end it still comes down to what has happened trough out history of the poor fighting the wars and paying for the decisions of the elitist few who risk very little.

Immigrants are already in the military.

Do you mean illegal immigrants? The government would never go for that idea because the only reason they're allowed to be here is for cheap labor. Put them in the military and it reduces the labor force.

its a good idea, but the military wont take you if you have a criminal back ground, it would be hard to find any that dont, since they made them selves criminals by coming here illegally.and they are not interested in learning english. i hate the press one for english **** too. and why would they want to fight for this country? when things got bad in theirs, they didnt stay, and try to make it better, they ran as fast as they could. i wouldnt want to be in battle, with a bunch like that.

Don't you think the pro-illegal crowd will cry "racism" over this? They already complain that too many "brown" people are fighting and most from lower income families. They forget that we have our armed forces are currently 100% voluntary. I'm not sure it would be worth it to hear the escalation in boo-hooing.

They already can join without being a citizen. After 1 day of active service, they are eligible to apply for citizenship.

I'd be ok with it as a path to legalization or citizenship, but not as the only path. Not everyone able to join the military.

However, I like it better than the Senate Bill.

I had posted basically the same question, but after i thought about it more, this would not work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the illegals will NOT even standup to their OWN government to fight for rights in their country, then why would they fight for OUR country, which they have NO loyalty for???!!!!!
