To quote one reply "do you want to spend eternity in the pits of hell burung with sulfur in the lake of fire??" Hmmm this would be a drawback.

This is better "He is a father or mother to us. Just get close enough and you'll realise. You know what, sincerely ask Him to show Himself to you and it'll happen. Ask with a genuineness of heart and spirit. I shall be here to hear your wonderful story.

One drawback I am beginning to notice is that there are two types of believer and I might have to socialise with them. The kind gentle type (I would like) and the stroppy self righteous.

You asked quite a question there! Think about it. What you said is you hope there is a God but made no mention of having any kind of relationship with him. So the biggest drawback would then be that there IS a God and you don't have a loving relationship with him so you end up missing out on all he has to offer. I'd call that one VERY BIG drawback. Wouldn't you?

Well, if you would really like there to be a God, then you are in luck!
The Father, the Son{Jesus Christ}, and the Holy Spirit are very real! I am a testimony to that! Stop by my blog sometime, you can learn about Him there, if you don't have a bible.
If you have a bible , read it, or go buy one.

All it takes is faith to believe the FREE GIFT of eternal life through Jesus Christ, who came to Earth in the flesh, He lived a life without sin because He was God in the flesh! Jesus was persicuted for being righteous and true, and He was delivered over and was put to death. He paid our sin debt on the cross, by the shedding of His blood. He died, then rose again on the third day, and is now seated on the right hand of God!

There are no drawbacks !!! Salvation of your soul, and eternal life with Jesus Christ in Heaven.
God loves you, and He can wash away ALL of your sins, no-matter what they are! He cares for you DEEPLY!
Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father in Heaven!

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.
Joh 3:18 He who believes on Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
Joh 3:21 But he who practices truth comes to the Light so that his works may be revealed, that they exist, having been worked in God.

You hope is a good hope. Look around you, can you not see the great works that god has given us.
Could any man have create the sky and the stars? No.

the drawbacks are that if it's true, you have to act like it.

The bible (I know Christianity is not the only religion, but it's the one I know about most) says that those who follow Jesus should not expect a placid, peaceful life, but one of persecution and or service.

So it's funny that some people see Christianity, or believing in God as a 'crutch' when in fact, it's actually hard to love your neighbour, to forgive those who persecute you or treat you unfairly, and to act in a way that is pleasing to God. It's far easier to forget about it all, screw the little people, make money, buy things, look out for number one, don't be generous with your money, etc.

But then the reward...?

The only drawback I can think of is KNOWING there is a God and not being able to be part of his kingdom. Thankfully we have a Savior that allowed us a permanent spot in God's garden of life. If you are curious and really want to know what life and our Lord is all about, go to www.notreligion.com. May God bless you.

you don't have to hope for there to be a God, God already is. And there are no drawbacks to having God - no matter what anyone tells you, the bible, of which God is the author, tells us who He is. Why believe in something or someone you dont know? The bible allows us to get to know God so we can believe. Is it useless to have a car if you do not know where it is or how to drive it. I know that my car is in my driveway but how do i REALLY know unless I look at it, sit in it and actually drive it. It is the same regarding God and His Word. How do you KNOW what it says until you try it, believe it, see God do things for you and then you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have a wonderful God. Here are some things to get you started.
God is the author of the bible: 11 Peter 1:21 "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man but holy men of GOd spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" AKA God told them. 11 Timothy 2:15 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God" this is the greek word which means that it was "God-breathed", it came straight from God. It was not a biography written about God, the bible IS God's Word.
God did not appear because mankind hoped for Him, God made us because he wanted a family to love and care for, that is why throughout the bible, those who loved God and walked in his statutes were called his children, the children of Israel are universally known of (Exodus 2:25, 3:14-15, 1 Samurel 10:18) (1 Kings 11:33 refers to a false God, Baalim or Baal. We know it to be a false god because it is spelled with a lowercase "g" and throughout the bible, Baalim's followers tested his presence and he was never there (1 Kings 18:1-39)) In the new testament, once Holy Spirit became available throught Jesus Christ's being raised from the dead by God, the born-again believers are called His children (Romans 8:16-21). One gets born again by doing what you are doing, BELIEVING. In Romans 10:9-10 it says that all we need to do to believe IN YOUR HEART that Jesus Christ was the SON of God (not God himself) and believe that God raised him from the dead; by this you are saved. The same is said in Galatians 3:26, 1 John 5:13.. God created you, He knows you better than you know yourself (Psalm 139). He wants you to know Him too (Ephesians 1:18). God also wants YOU to know who YOU are when you are born again and all the things available to you, like....
1 John 3:1-2 We ARE the SONS and DAUGHTERS of GOD!
Phillipians 4:19 But my God shall supply all you need according to his riches and glory by Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:37 (verses 35-36 ask who or what can separate us from God and His love) can anything? "Nay, in ALL these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." we are always victorious because we have God on our side!
Ephesians 3:20 God is able to do exceeding, abundantly above all that we ask or think!
Colossians 2:10. Have you ever heard people say that something is missing in their life, they are unhappy, they are looking for something more? Well, you can have that 'more' because when you get born again you are "complete in him!"

So take a look at the bible, especially Acts, Romans, Ephesians and the whole new testament. This section was written to and for the born again believers. The old testament was written for our learning, so we could see how good God was to His people, how He kept His promises, etc (Romans 15:4).

There are no DRAWBACKS to believing in a one true God. How could there be drawbacks to one who can deliver you from sin, heal you from sicknesses, save you from yourself and others, give you the desires of your heart, and take you to Heaven and keep you out of Hell. Ummm...I am still seeing no drawbacks.

i think the only drawback is that since you appear to questioning god's existence, you may go back and forth between believing in god and not believing in god, in search of the truth despite your hope. even if it is a false hope, there are studies that show that people who choose a spiritual path or religion tend to be happier.
