If it was a suicide? Then would you have to have an autopsy?

You ask alot of questions regarding things that seem to be pointing to something bigger. However autopsys where I live are not performed out of necessity but by request. Depends on local laws regarding death.

no, they do not always do autopsys, only in cases where the cause of death is questionable. Maybe too if the the family questions the cause. Have you ever watched that program on tv , geez I can't remember the name of it. oh, Dr.G the medical examiner. She does autopsies on people, it is interesting because it is so sad. There are healthy people and alot of time the family needs answers as to why their loved one passed because they thought they were healthy, so she does do an autopsy to find out and give the famiyl peace of mind.

It depends on what you mean.

If they know you died of a gunshot wound, they'd still do an autopsy. If you were dying of cancer, they probably wouldn't. For instance, my grandmother recently passed away from cancer; she died at home in hospice care. When she passed, hospice was called. Her body was taken directly to the funeral home; no autopsy was done.

I believe, however, family members may request one if they believe "foul play" was involved in a "natural" death - like if they suspect that someone hastened the "natural" death with an overdose of morphine or something (euthanasia).

No. If you die because of a known disease, the doctor that knows the cause of death signs the death certificate.

But if the cause is violent, such as accident or murder, autopsy is done for legal reasons.
