How can you calculate you gpa?

i'm living out of the country right now and they dont have gpa's on their report cards and i wanted to know how you can calculate it yourself.

You need to know the equivalent of A, B, C, D, F, which will depend on what country you are in (and different US school systems interpret grades from other countries differently, alas.)
If you receive the same letter grades,
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0
Add up your grades and divide by the number of courses.
You can also use the 12-scale (a+=12 down to F=0), figure it out that way and then divide by four. Little more accurate, little more work.
So if you had 5 classes, 1 A, 3 Bs and 1 C, your total would be 15, divided by 5 =3, GPA is 3.0

Frauhwolzer's answer is close, but many school districts use '+' and '-' designations for each letter grade (except for 'F'), so the full detail is as follows:

A = 4
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1
D- = .7
F = 0

Add up the total number and divide by the number of classes taken. Here's an example:

B- in Math = 2.7
C+ in Reading = 2.3
A- in Phys. Ed = 3.7
B in Spelling = 3

So, the total is 11.7. Divide by 4. And the overall GPA is 2.925
