Loreli, it's nice to see that you are a bit more enlightened than most religious types I have run across. Please see my additional comments about some of the other people answering this question.

Smileygirl and sunpekes - I think you'll find that atheists appear to be 'angry and judgemental' because they are forced to live in a world that pushes an irrational belief. My question is a bit of a charade - of course not ALL atheists are nice people, but I'm wondering why it is many people who are religious automatically think that nice and atheist are incompatable. (See above)

Buckar you didn't get on the angry christian list, but you are a freak.

I think it's funny how atheists think they are so nice...when honestly, what I hear from MOST of them is how stupid anyone is who believes in a God, who believes in creationism.
Then they go on and on about how anyone who believes in any religion is constantly pushing it on everyone else.

Well guess what?? I think atheists push THEIR belief the most...they make fun of others and and don't respect the fact that some people have different beliefs then they do.

I'm not saying that some Christians/Catholics/Muslims/Jews/(any other religion) don't do the same thing....I'm just saying it's time for atheists to admit that they do it to!!

Now...all that being said...I have met some atheists that are very nice people...but you can't just group a whole bunch of people together like that and make it a true statement...cause it's not.

Maybe because atheists don't judge as opposed to religious people (very ironic since this should be a religious man's characteristic).

One other reason would be that they don't make the mistake of being sure they are right (as opposed to religious men which strongly believe their religion is the right one). As a result, they are more open and open minded, always enjoying a debate.

Edit:

And third.: because their system of values is based on ethics logic and common sense rather than some words in a book.

Well now, diggin aren't ya? ROFL Actually, I've met some very nice Atheists. You just can't put em with Fundie/Fanatic Christians. Then it really does look like the world is coming to an end.

There are nice people all over the world. Some are atheists and some believe in a higher power. There are also people all around the world who are not so nice.

Many atheists are really very happy since they realize that, contrary to what many believe, not all atheists belief in no deity. More likely, they follow no specific religion; while they may in fact understand that some kind of larger force directs the course of all-that-exists.

Notwithstanding the vicious and hateful arguments of goth-wanna-be's that find it pitifully stylish to represent themselves as vacuous of ANY positon on anything other than having NO position--- the rest of those who just haven't decided-- sometimes referred to as agnostics-- would rather not restrict their Creator any more than their Creator restricts them-- and take great and happy comfort in that awareness.

my boss is an atheist and hes a good person. he respect other people's belief including mine (Christian).though he has different point of view in life, spirituality etc. , never i heard him insulted religion of any kind. he's intelligent and very kind too.

that was my impression of atheists and it was all blown to smithereens upon reading questions here from other atheists.

the question should be:
why are some atheists such nice people?

i will definitely agree with your question.

In my experience on this website I have read mostly nasty commentary from professing Atheists. A few are nice, but largely the majority seem to be seeking recognition and approval. It appears from many answers all they want to do is tear down other people's faith and happiness.
Many are highly intelligent, but it appears to me that they are too smart for their own good.

I am an atheist, and I'm a nice person because instead of doing good things to get into heaven, or so God doesn't punish me, I do them for the sake of doing good. I don't need a better reason.

Being "nice" has little to do with being a Christian, except that it is simply part of living as a decent human being. One does not have to be Christian in order to be a decent human being.

The problem with us Christians, is that some of us want to force our belief system on others, instead of attracting others to it. We think everyone will love being a Christian so much, once they are one, that we don't care how we bring them to Christ.

I'm an atheist but I don't think you can generalize that atheists are nice versus religious people. We are all unique people.

However, the one thing that atheists do have going for us is that we don't feel the need to condemn people to hell everytime we disagree about our beliefs. It's refreshing!
