Basically, maintenance engineer has to keep the equipment in working condition, by recognizing the critical points, where a breakdown can occur, then to prescribe the procedure for fixing the critical condition and to look over overhauling of the equipment. It is very wide range of responsibilities, so You should first ask about the equipment You will be maintaining.

There is really only one practical answer. Since the scope of your responsibilities can vary from company to company, you need to ask the company making the offer to define those for you. It should be an expected question and a very reasonable one. In fact, if I were the one hiring and you didn't ask that question I would be concerned.
