As a woman using matchmaking, I wondered about that too. When a site offered free trial membership, I experimented. I ran TWO ads, using two different photos and with each "clone" seeking a very different sort of man. Each clone received 100's of responses.
20% was "spam" -- guys sending identical responses to BOTH clones. There aren't dozens of women out there "personals spamming", or you men would be getting dozens of responses.
20% was ... er ... shall we call them "freaks"? They use the site to initiate phone calls, chat, letters ... but never a face-to-face meeting. Best that a lady not even try to imagine WHY a fellow would spend hours (and $30 a month) to participate in a dating site when he has no interest in dating, LOL.
Another 20% was "in denial" -- A lady's ad reads "seeks slender west-side man for weekly tennis dates" and gets responses like "I'm a overweight, don't play tennis, and live on the east side, but once you meet me, I'm sure you'll ..... " and so on.
The last 20% of "worthless respondants" is fellows seem to have an idea any and every lady who runs a personal ad is offering the instant physical intimacy of a prostitute, but without the irksome requirement of payment. Yes, even my "clone" who described herself as "attending church regularly, seeking marriage and family" was troubled with these guys.
So out of these "hundreds of responses" which we ladies receive, about 80% are purely JUNK MAIL. Even discounting the junk mail, we ladies STILL get more responses than you men, however. I'd say that some basic inequality in the dynamics of dating and mating comes into play here, just like in real life.

But still am a guy & I hgave been to many dating sites & emailed maybe 15-20 women at the most & I have not gotten a reply

Because the men do the chasing more often than the women.

because men tend to be more agressive at getting women. Women like to wait on men then chasing men.

women are very selective and cautious - men will just go for anything hoping that out of sheer numbers they'll get a hit
