Every 40 seconds a muslim woman is murdered in the name of honor. muslim girls are put through the horror of FGM (female genital mutilation) , forced marraiges to old men, child marraiges and other forms of torture. and its getting worse for muslim females. wife rape is very common among muslim men, and as a result over 75% of married muslim women suffer from vaginal problems such as constant discharge. I know doctors in dubai who tell me this, and the world health organisation reports it as well.
I am glad that some brave muslim women are speaking out even when they are threatened with death.

All over the world people have believed through out history in honor killings. But what are these honor crimes. These crimes “are acts of violence, usually murder, committed by male family members against female family members who are perceived to have brought dishonor upon the family.” A family may feel the need to commit such a crime by “refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce even from an abusive husband or committing adultery.” Even the thought of a woman bringing dishonor to a family may cause an attack.

Honor killings, as described by Wikipedia online encyclopedia, is generally considered a premeditated crime yet crimes of passion. “Crimes of passion often have special status under the law.”

The West is not immune to this type of violence against women. “Until 1975, the French Penal Code commuted the sentence of a husband who killed his wife after finding her in the act of committing adultery; this law passed into the legal frameworks of the many nations who based their modern legal codes on the Napoleonic Code.” Yet these crimes of passion are small in number “and are different from premeditated crimes against an adulterous spouse.”

As of 2004, honor killings have occurred not only in the East but also many European countries, “including: Bangladesh, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Sweden, Turkey, Uganda and the United Kingdom.” The United Nations Population Fund believes that annually there are worldwide 5,000 women killed through honor killings. these killings are often made to look like suicide, fire or an accident.

In a traditional view of Islamic law says there should be a “severe punishments for zina' , or extramarital sex, by both men and women.” Premarital can be punished by 100 lashes, and adultery by lethal stoning. To implement such a punishment the act must be seen by “at least four male witnesses of good character. The punishment is to be “reserved to the legal authorities, and false accusations are themselves punished severely. In conservative areas many men consider it a slur on the family's honor if women in the family are found to have relationships with other men outside of marriage, or when they marry without their families' consent.”

An honor killing in the Islamic definition refers to “specifically to extra-legal punishment by the family against the woman, and as such is forbidden by the sharia.” The “Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran has condemned the practice as ‘un-Islamic’, though punishment under Iranian law remains lenient. In Pakistan, when a bill proposing to strengthen the law against ‘Honor Killing’ was defeated in Parliament, March 2, 2005, the government allied with the Islamist opposition to decide explicitly that the bill was ‘un-Islamic’. In Jordan there is a movement to stop honor killings. Although King Abdullah II has tried to bring new light onto this subject. He has gone to the parliament for change but not received warmly. But after hearing this the people went to the streets in protest. Trying to bring his country into a modernist point of view.

Yet there are still areas of modern thought, showing this a cultural practice not Islamic. In Indonesia and parts of West Africa honor killings are unknown, “as also in with majority-Muslim populations.” These areas are not culturally Arab yet Indonesia is the largest Islamic country. These areas give hope for other Islamic nations to also not allow these actions against women.

With all that have been done in the world to protect the women in the world there is still more to be done. Honor crimes are not based in Islam but in culture. By bringing this fact into the public spectrum it is more likely to stop such a practice. Around the world women are still victims of crimes by family members seeing the family honor in her true and perceived actions. A woman’s blood does not need to flow just to bring honor back to a man.

I can see you're focused on this issue. It's not just lashing out against Islam but you are interested in issues affecting Muslim women.
I'm not a Muslim, but I think you should separate the issues. It seems that they are not necessarily part if Islam but each prevails in some part of the developing world that happens to be Islamic.
Probably "honor killing" is some twisted form of "sharia", which is twisted and barbaric itself. This is a throwback to cruel ancient customs, and it seems to be imbedded in some areas of the Islamic world, though not in most. It is an abomination and not at all honorable.
FGM is mostly confined to Africa and to people who come from there and it is not otherwise found in Asia, Europe or America. I would have to say then that it is not a practice associated with Islam, but one that comes our of Africa. Again, it is one of the worst cruel and deadly practices toward women in the world. Even if you believe you should not judge other cultures and religions, this is a practice that is just plain mutilation (at best) and murder (at worst).
Child marriages and wife rape are different issues and are not confined to Islam. In most of the world men feel that they have the right to have sex from their wives whenever they want it. You can find plenty of Christians that practice wife rape.
So the way I see it is like this: Most Muslim men in the West anyway, are decent loving moral men who make very good husbands because they don't stray. In other parts of the world, there are plenty of Muslim men who would also fit this description, but there are also too many who hate women and have no respect for them. They have higher respect for their animals than their wives. They kill, mutilate, rape and disrespect their women, have multiple relationships and pass HIV along to all of their wives and lovers. It's beyond tragedy! But what they do is not necessarily connected with Islam. Many would say it is a perversion of Islam.
I'm really glad a lot of Muslim women are speaking out and able to get a better education now. They are really heroic and their voices need to be heard. The level of prosperity and achievement in any culture depends on how they treat their women.
Here is a completely wonderful book to read (fiction) about a girl who had European parents, who was orphaned in Africa, lived there for many years, and then moved to England. It is very well written and compelling, though not judgemental. It talks about some of the issues you raised. "Sweetness in the Belly" by Camilla Gibb.
If my spelling is bad, I apologize because "Spell check" is not working now.

firstly, Algeria is a dominantly muslim country. secondly, honor killings are not a part of Islam so please do not associate muslims with particular traditions of certain countries. In Islamic Shariah, women cant even be jailed for adultery unless 4 people have witnessed the actual sexual act with their eyes in which the punishment for a married man or woman who commit adultery is stoning to death. for a non married man or woman the punishment is to be lashed a certain number of times. even if you see a man and woman together naked, you're not a valid witness because you did not actually see the act itself. However, in this day and age there are no countries muslim or not, who carry out the proper Shariah law therefore, even these punishments are not permitted in Islam. Think of the likelihood of 4 people witnessing the act....you cant say Islam isnt just.

You should be ashamed because you are a big liar. There is no honor killing in Islam, and if you want to defend your self you are invited to provide your evidence from the Quran.
Nearly 25 percent of women said they were assaulted by a current or former intimate partner, according to a report released by the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July 2000. This research was based on the National Violence Against Women (NVAW) Survey on intimate partner violence in the United States. The survey was conducted through telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample of 8,000 women and 8,000 men about their experiences with intimate partner violence.

A summary of the findings are quoted from the report, below. I'm a women, I converted to Islam. Your facts are wrong. There's something wrong with you. Why, If you know Islam is bad, do you want to attack it? We believe what we believe. Murder is not allowed in Islam, unless you are defending yourself and believe me all the Muslim women are fine, I know. So before you open your mouth to release the crap, thing about it first and please don't speak for us Muslim women as we are doing fine and can speak for ourselves. We don't need idiots like you who says the wrong facts about women in Islam and the teachings of Islam.

If you were a wise man and wanted ro expose the "EVIL" then what you doing posting your arguments on the Internet when you can do something else? Yes you are a fool because a wise man would know, pondering and posting your disbelief's on the Internet shows that you aren't that wise or intelligent, but instead you are stupid and conceited. If you believe so stronglly do something about it instead of stupidly posting your thoughts here.
You not influencing your narrow minded thoughts to anyone by the way.

Dear "irish joker"
Please bear in mind that "Islam is not Middle East and Middle East is not Islam". The fatcs (if it is) that you mentioned can not be generalised that all muslim countries have the same phenomena. If they do whatever you said, it doesn't necessarily mean that Islam tought so. They might be influenced with their culture which may opposite with Islamic way.
I give you an analogy : The Holy Bible forbiding Christian to do adultery. However, if a Christian does an adultery, it doesn't mean that Christian as a religion tought so.
You may check other moslem girls in other country such as Indonesia or Malaysia. They live their life normally as other girls in other countries in the world, with some restriction compares to those who live in the USA for instance (please watch the film 'Little House on The Prairie' to understand my argument). Yes, what we have to fight is human rights for all peoples, regardless their gender, or skin color, or nationality. May my comments give you a little bit of enlightment.

"No passage in the Koran discusses honor killings, but Muslim clerics justify them and secular Muslims either do not punish them or pass laws to mitigate punishment for them. With this, Muslims make honor killings a part of Islam."
