I read time and time again on here about people choosing television programs for young children and am constantly shocked. Studies have PROVEN that television is the cause of many problems in children. I have a two-year old who is yet to watch television, I feel that there are so many more things she can be doing with her time. Are there any other parents out there who believe that television is not good for children?

I agree that too much tv can be bad for anyone, child or adult. My son is 20 months old and he doesn't seem to be amused by tv at all. The only things he'll watch are the themes (songs only) to Law and Order and King of the Hill. Otherwise, he turns it off and asks to go outside. Children like to be active and they get fidgety if we expect them to sit around and flop. They need and want active stimulation... so we should listen to them as mich as possibe and get them active in others things. I think more kids these days are addicted to tv because of the whole women's tights, women in the workplace movement... without a parent at home some children can't decide for themselves what's more appropriate. It's not always the parent's fault that they have to make a living... but it helps if we teach them better values when they are little...

Some educational TV for children is okay, within reason - not for hours at a time. The biggest problem I see is too many parents use TV as a babysitter, and really have no idea what they are watching. There was parental control before the V chip - it was called the off button.

Watching a little TV - about an hour a day - isn't terrible for children. Of course they shouldn't sit in front of it all day long watching whatever they feel like - but an educational program here and there isn't terrible. Of course it is your right to allow or not allow your child to watch TV. I like to let my daughter watch about an hour a day - something like Sesame Street, Blue's Clues, or Veggie Tales. And we spend lots of time reading, coloring, playing outside, etc. It isn't the only entertaining thing in her life. I want her to learn, as with all things, moderation is the key. Hopefully then when she gets older and is at a friends house where I can't control her TV time - she will rememer that a little is okay and not go over board with it.

I got your back. My son only watches maybe an hour per week. We give him the option of watch tv 30 before bed, rarely will he watch. He would rather play till bedtime. He has the best imagination. My husband and I will turn off the tv sometimes and just listen to him play, its a riot. Good for you. Im glad to know there is someone else out there that isnt using the tv as a babysitter or educator.

Their are no affects of television on kids. Only rotten parenting will affect kids. Parents have to stop using TV as a baby sitter. Get involved with your children and you won't watch as much TV. Try it you'll like it!

i dont think any tv for any age of children is good. my son is about 8 months...i always have the tv on for background noise so yes he does get some tv but he seems very uninterested in it. i dont believe in those "educational videos" until the child is much older and can understand. right now my son is just interested in the fast movements and colors he sees on the tv...not whats being said so i dont just sit him infront of the tv so i can go off and do what i want to do while telling myself that what my son is watching is "educational" and is good for him bc its not. and besides from what i read in time magazine they havent done studies on those "educational" videos but it says that theyre not really educational

I think shows like Dora the Explorer is very good for kids it teaches them spanish and helps them regconinze different things, and i also think that the PBS station is very educational.. Them are the things that my 3 and 2 year old watches and they both have learned alot from them.. So not all shows are bad for kids to watch you just have to choose the right ones for them to watch..

Too much is not good. When my kids were your daughters age, they watched movies and pre-school shows as well as used the computer with educational software designed for pre-schoolers. They never had any problems.
