the TDI does NOT get 50 mpg anywhere and it's much dirtier than a prius- hell they're not even available in california emissions states!
they're 36/41 according to fueleconomy.gov
the prius is 60 (city) 51(highway) not the other way around. and since i can get 42 mpg going 80mph cross country with the cruise control on, i'm sure at legal speeds you can do much better.
and funny everyone mentions repair costs when VWs are known for absolute crap quality and ridiculous repair costs.
maintenance is actually lower in hybrids. maintenance schedule is basically tire rotation and LOF every 5k miles. air filter changes every 30k, spark plugs at 120k, etc etc etc
plus there's no transmission to blow- at least on a prius- because it's a fixed planetary gearset (no moving parts to grind against each other) and brake pad replacement is pretty much nonexistent due to regenerative braking.
electric motors are self contained and require no maintenance.
the price of the battery pack stands about $3k. it's warranted for 8 years/100k. and you know the cost of technology drops with time.
the entire hybrid system is warranted for 8 years/100k miles actually. again, cost of technology decreases with time. anything that's on the 3/36 warranty, well, you'd be taking the same risk with any other car since those parts aren't in the hybrid system.

I recomend you should not buy a hybrid. If you are looking for a car with great gas mileage you should buy a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. You can get about 50 mpg on the highway and it costs less than a hybrid and is more practical. Although the Prius says it will get 60 mpg on the highway most owners will only get about 45mpg. Here is a video of a review of a Toyota Prius-http://youtube.com/watch?v=H_5VfwihIpo&search=top%20gear

Maintenance is comparable, but FUTURE maintanance is potentially much higher. So LEASE it!!
Make sure initial price is justified by mileage, in most cases I think you will find it may not be.

Maintenance costs are pretty much the same.
Repairs, however are MUCH more expensive.
