A parent should be a daily example for their children to learn from. You cannot tell your children that drugs, smoking and /or alcohol are bad then turn around and be drunk or high on drugs.A parent is the very first role model a child will have. You must LISTEN to your children not just speak to them. You may be surprised what you both will learn. Know your children's friends.Have them come to your home and make them welcome. You will get a pretty good idea of how your child thinks by knowing their friends. A red flag should go up if their friends never come to your house. Talk with your children about issues such as drugs, alcohol and smoking.Don't forget the sex talk as well. Try have these discussions nonconfrontational. and encourage their input.Let your children know they are loved and give them a strong foundation on which they can draw on to make sound decisions.Allow them to make decisions and even make mistakes so that they will learn what is a good choice and what is not. Let them know that actions have consequences. Finally let them know you are there for them no matter what.

Education is the best prevention.

Letting kids know what's really going on, the causes for the behavior, and especially the long term effects. And talking about it casually; not getting on a soap box, not being angry, just casual.

My 9 year olds are quick to mention that when they see a person light a cigarette - that person must be from a poor, uneducated family...because smoking makes them look like poor, uneducated people - everyone knows smoking kills not only the smoker but those who have to breathe the second hand smoke.

There was a smoking commercial that had a mother talking to her baby about not smoking. That's the right idea. It's never too early to start educating your children about drugs and smoking. Even saying 'smoking is yucky' to your toddler will get the point accross. Schools usually have educational programs that promote drug/smoke free lives. But continue to update and educate your children as they grow older and don't have these programs avaliable.

let them watch a program about drugs ,smoking and alcohol the bad about it and let them learn for what they see in it you can only prevent them from it but there is no promise that they will follow teach them the bad things if they want to live a hard life like in prison or having a happy life just be there when they need you the most.good luck and look after yourself and the kids.

You have to show them a better way. Take them to Church, and let them become to know their God. And let God show them the way, to live. And he will guide their steps through life. And they won't feel comfortable around people like this. And they will want to stay away from stuff like this. God is really the only way out of this. Read Acts 2:38. It will show you what to do, and how to live a safe, and promising live. God is so wonderful!! And he's the only answer in this world today. Without his Guidence there's really not much hope, or promises for the future. It's all in HIM..

I'll give you a unique perspective on this question. I have no kids, but have been through it all with my parents, and I'll tell you something, watching who your kids are hanging out with is probably the number one thing to keep them from being influenced. Anytime I was doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing, I was doing it with people my parents didn't want me hanging out with. If I had listened, I could have avoided a lot of heartache and struggle. Your kids will become who they hang out with, so monitor and filter through their friends, let them choose, but guide their choices. It will help in the long run.

Talk to them about it. Read up on the affects
drugs do the body. Pictures and facts.
Do room checks. It's your home.
Like the Father did on the news. His Son had
drugs. He called the Cops.
Let your children know this. That you will to.
Know the things they are doing in their lives.
Friends, hangouts, people they make contact
with.
Keep the lines open for communicating.

you can never guarentee prevention, but you can try. Keep them involved with sports or other activiities, spend lots of family time together. Give them a reason to want to with fun activities. Bike ride or play catch with them, bowl, camp, have hobblies. And pay attention to who their friends are. Let their friends hang around your house. A kid on drugs won't usually hang around a house where there is lots of supervision.
