Ok, I need a day off, no it is not an emergency, I just have a lot of stuff I need to get done, take cats to get spayed, then my husbands graduation is later on that night, about an hour away, so even if i have to come into work, i would ask to leave early anyway. Are we allowed to just request one day off and it not have to be an emergency or tdy or anything like that? Also, for any supervisors out there-Would you like for me to just straight up tell you I have a lot to do? I would rather tell him the truth but not if it won't get me a day off! Thank you for the help!

Just tell the supervisor you have a ton of things to do and need a personal day. They will either understand. Or they wont.

It depends on the supervisor, the unit, and how hard and dedicated a worker you are. Most units I have been in (special operations and unifed/strategic) it has been okay to do that once in a while.

If your husband is at school and you are home by yourself (till tonight) then I'd say go for it and just tell him straight up that you have a lot of errands to run before your husband graduates and comes home. And of course let him know that you are going to attend the graduation an hour away.

As a former supervisor I know that's what I always wanted - folks to be straight up with me.

Oh one more thing - let him know a few days in advance that way he can have the ability to say, "Fine, you can have the day off, but you need to get "A," "B," and "C" done before you take off."

And make sure you submit a DA 31 before you leave just to cover your butt.

It's going to depend on a lot of things, such as --

Are you a shift worker and if so, will getting the day off cause your section to go below min. manning?

Will getting the day off give you a 72? A military supervisor is a lot less likely to give you that. Will it give you a 96? If so, then they can't give it to you - that has to be approved at a higher level than your sup.

Do you ask for time off a lot? (Whether it's legit. reasons or not, if, say, you are always needing time off for Dr.s appointments, etc, and needing people to cover for you, then you are less likely to get a day to take care of what you need to do.)

If you are a shift worker, can you switch shifts with someone (with permission from both shift supervisors)? If you are a dayworker, can you stay late the day before / the day after to get things caught up?

Do you have good evals/ a good worker with a good relationship with your supervisor? (and is your supervisor a jerk?)

How "critical" is the job you are doing?

Instead of asking for the whole day off, are you willing to, say, ask to go home at lunch? (Maybe come in an hour early and go home at lunch...)

Are you willing to run a leave chit and just take the day off that way?

Is there a reason you can't take care of the cats on your day off, or your husband can't do it?

I don't mean these questions to sound like I'm being a jerk, it's just that these are the sorts of things that are going to come into play as far as whether you get the day off or not.

As far as lying about it - that is NOT a good idea - they are going to find out if you make up an emergency, then you are not only going to be up the creek, but if you do ever have a REAL emergency they aren't going to let you go (the whole boy who cried wolf thing...). If you say you are sick, they are going to send you to medical for an SIQ chit. Since you said TDY instead of TAD, I'm assuming you are Army or Air Force, and while we are Navy here I know that TDY / TAD orders aren't cut for personal day sorts of stuff.

I would just talk to your supervisor, tell them you have a lot of personal stuff going on that day, some of it (like the grad) can't be rescheduled, and some of it you are hoping to schedule on that day so you can just get everything done at once, and can you have the day off. They might make you run a leave chit. Whether they give you the day off or not, or whether they give you leave or not, you will be MUCH better off not lying about it...

Is there someone who can cover for you? What would be the backlash if you didn't get your work done that day, could you make it up. Just be prepared to answer these kind of questions when you tell your boss. He might ask why you would schedule your cats for the same day as graduation and why didn't you let him know earlier. Personally I am a manager of 25 people and if they can get their job covered( someone else will answer phones for them, their clients know who their backup person is, whatever is relevent to your work) I don't care. EVERYBODY needs to take a personal day, and if you're in CA you GET two personal days a year. And absolutely YES please tell the truth, because what you're asking for at this time of year is not invalid. If you covered your absence and you're upfront I would give the day off, no problem. If you didn't go straight up and someone saw you or I saw you, then we would have a problem, because now you're lying and that's a whole new deal! Take care of the kits and congrats on the hubby's graduation!

Just tell him that you have an appointment for that day and you want to know if you can get out early that day or do you have to request a pass or leave.

Most of the time they will let you out of work for an appointment unless you are seen as a Dirt bag. and mentioning the leave makes you seem like less of a Dirt bag so hopefully that will work for you.

Tell the truth and see where it gets you. No point destroying the trust by lying. You will be found out.

I don't rate your chances, but good luck with that.
