Good question , my theory is that people then had nothing to believe in , someone wrote the book and all of a sudden they had a messiah!

That is a tough question, but a great one. Certainly many would say that we cannot know, since it was written so many years ago. Others might say that it can't be true, considering the human authors and the ideas found within it.

I think one way to determine whether it is true or not is to use a rule to measure it that you would use in order to determine if another text contained truths.

One place to start is historical accuracy. How accurate is the Bible in its tellings of people, situations, geography, etc? Can these items be verified by other writings, archaeological findings, etc.? Though I am no historian, it seems clear from my research of Christian and non-Christian historians that the Bible is the most historically accurate book ever written. I have also read that, though I'm sure some doubt this, that there is more evidence of Jesus Christ having existed than any other individual in human history.

What if history is not your cup of tea? Another thing you could do is read it. Test it for yourself. Do the wisdom and principles within it resonate with you? Does it contradict what is good and right, or does it bring focus on those things?

I personally am a Christian and believe that as Paul writes in Timothy, that the Bible is inspired by God (literally, God breathed). I believe it contains truth and wisdom that are profitable for all ways of life. But you must search for yourself.
I'd be happy to help along the way.

Matthew- Mark- Luke- and John have long been named as 'authors. It's not true, this is a fact, it is not true!!
No need for religious nuts to deny it!! It is not true.
But the answer to your question is yes there were authors at at that time obviously some one, or some groups wrote the documents!
The big problem is that there were also very many editors, possibly as many editors as authors, all having a little poke about and altering and mainly censoring the original documents! to suit the whims of whoever was paying their wages!
So both the Old Testament and the New have been changed beyond all recognition!
What started out as a great fictitious story has during the course of time turned into an unbelievable tale of fantasy !!
By the way I enjoyed your question it shows an enquiring mind and one not just open to popular belief.!! Good luck in your quest for the truth, I've been there and done that!!

The oldest religious writings in human history.
The bible is a volume of books and letters from Moses (completed in 1513 B.C.E.) to the apostle John (competed 96 C.E.)
Altogether 40 writers from different times, lands, races and walks of life wrote the God inspired scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17) in 66 books over a period of around 1500 years. Finally completed almost 2000 years ago.
Jesus Christ quoted from the Hebrew scriptures himself
(Matthew 4:1-10) (Luke 24:44) as examples. So Christ had faith in the bible written in that time.
The bible has prevailed when governments and even religions had banned the book. Even as far as putting a death sentence to anyone who dare own a bible. Satan doesn't wish humans to learn from the bible about God he wants humanity in spiritual darkness. But God's power keeps the bible alive.
Some people will deny the bible (Psalms 14:1) no matter how strong the evidence is and will wish to remain blinded and cannot see the Truth (Luke 10:21) and because it is religious they will refuse the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11) - nothing can be done for them and alas they cut themselves off from knowledge of their Creator and possibly from eternal life.
1 Corinthians 1:19-21

Ephesians 4:14
Proverbs 3: 13-15

As a non religious person I would have to say that yes it was a work of fiction. I personally do not believe it is true, just an account of mass- hysteria surrounding a coincidence of events. The big bang is more reliable account of how this world began and the idea that a God created in a week is just plain silly.

I'm not at all judgemental about people who are religious and actually envy them because they have got faith and there is so little of it this day and age, it just doesn't appeal to me at all.

yes i believe that the bible is to a great existent fiction. but you have to understand that the people who wrote the first bible ware as fanatical as we think some Muslims are today if not more so. and when someone who is a fanatic writes something it will always be coloured by how thy think and feel

Faith!

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work.

2Pe 1:19 We also have a more sure Word of prophecy, to which you do well to take heed, as to a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the Daystar arises in your hearts,
2Pe 1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture came into being of its own private interpretation.
2Pe 1:21 For prophecy was not borne at any time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke being borne along by the Holy Spirit.

It's a huge collection of disparate stories, poems, and folklore written in different ages by many people. Much of it was passed on from one person to another by word of mouth for centuries.

Have you ever played the game "Telephone"? In five minutes with just a handful of people you can completely mess up a single sentence. Imagine how much can get messed up with thousands of sentences, countless people, hundreds of years, and various translations.

I don't believe most of the Bible was written intentionally as fiction, but it's basically a living mythology.

The Bible comes from the dead sea scrolls, dated to around two thaousand years ago and have been linked directly to the time of Jesus and before due to Historical fact. Like Pontius Pilot beeing the Roman Govoner being recorded by Greek and Roman Historians. So it is true!

I think the fact that they were not authors is more of a testament to believing when you read the bible with the guidance of the holy spirit you realize the total amazing truth of it all and how cohesive it is.....the simple fact is if you believe in god you would have to believe he is capable of getting his word to his people accurately...and the fact that the bible is still the best seller of all time through centuries is a testament to its truths...the best way to be sure is to study and pray and wait on god and he will reveal his truths to you...those that study the bible and believe it....believe it because God has used the holy spirit to reveal these things are true....but as i said the best way to know is to seek God and pray for understanding God reveals himself to those that value him and seek him with all of there heart.

It could have been - I mean look at Dan brown and the uproar he's caused over his books. I suppose the bible is like any other book in religion. It's not the words written that keep people believing, it's the faith.
