Go for it!
Most people chose a safe option like Australia, and spend a year drinking themselves stupid.
Something like you are planning will remain with you for the rest of your life.
Walking across the desert will require a lot of planning though, you'll probably need to take a camel with you.

I worked for 5 years in Egypt both in the desert (Sinai)and off shore.
I worked 28 days on and 28 days home leave.
You will not need a year to do whatever you want to do, a couple of months will be enough max!
Camp in the desert at night, watch the stars?? I'm sorry it's all just a romantic illusion!
Poison animals? I really hated the tiny black scorpions ' very poisonous , I'm not scared of creepy crawly things but I was scared of these!
Egyptian people are very friendly and a happy bunch, eager to please tourists, and just touring around the usual attractions is some thing you will always remember. But you will not need a year.
Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Exactly what area of the Egyptian desert are you planning on traveling through? Some areas around the Suez Canal, Western desert and Sinai are still contaminated with landmines - this is the biggest danger in traversing through remote parts of Egyptian deserts - especially if you plan on doing it on your own. Check Lonely Planet's guide to check where the areas to avoid are. I think hiring a Bedouin guide would also be wise.

I have been to Egypt every year for the last 5 years. Its cool. If you dont mind noise and a lot of traffic and people, its cool! The history is amazing, The desert is nice too. Nothing too poisonous there. I saw a couple snakes but they were small.

Definitely!!!!!
However, I do not think it's safe to camp out in the deserts alone as chances are, you might be robbed or worse.

But accomodations are cheap, and you can always venture out on day hikes from the Giza, Luxor, Karnak... You can also join other people to go on short treks or to take the fellucca down the Nile (but don't go ALONE if you're a female!).
