There are no "permanent" meanings of words. Since we have a living language, as opposed to a dead one like Latin, new words are being added every day. We also throw out words that are of little, or no, use anymore.
New connotations are being added to words all the time. If that connotation becomes widely used it will be added to the dictionary and become a denotation of the word.
For example:
The word "gay" in 1930 meant happy or light hearted. Around the 1950s a new connotation (local, or slang meaning of a word) started being used. After several years, the word became widely used as another way of saying homosexual. It eventually became so widely used, it became a denotation (dictionary meaning of a word). It will remain as a definition for homosexual until it stops being used.
As for the permanent meaning of the word "news", look in the dictionary. The first meaning listed is usually the original meaning of the word.
You can also see where the word came from. A good dictionary will list all of the languages a word went through on its way into English.

The permanent meaning of the news gives you information about what is going on in the world (locally and internationally). It keeps you informed of important issues - they may not matter much at this age but I guarantee that as you grow older the relevance will be self evident. It helps inform you of what your government is doing, right or wrong. When it is time for you to vote this will be very important. It can also show you how lucky you are to live in a free country - once you see how others in the world live you are grateful just to have a roof over your head and food to eat - not to mention clothes, medicine, modern appliances. Learning something new is never a waste of time as it may help you or someone you care about in the future - it also will teach you to think critically and make your own decisions instead of "going with the flow"
