ISDN is Integrated SERVICES Digital Network.

There's a good explanation and tutorial here: http://www.ralphb.net/ISDN/defs.html

What it is NOT is a disease (so why is it in this category?).

The services it integrates are voice and data and it does this digitally (that is in pulses of ons and offs rather than using a constantly varying voltage, which is called analogue) over a normal phone line. It is a network because each subscriber's line is connected to a network and allocated its own address on the network.

The connection to the network by your ISDN provider allows you to have (usually) a phone connection and an internet connection delivered to you on the same line - there is some clever stuff that sorts out which is which.

Of course, being connected to the Internet, you can do all sorts of things such as the research you mentioned, play games, listen to music and ask and answer questions.

If you had a Cable connection (rather than an ISDN connection on a normal phone line) you could also add cable TV delivered to your television set rather than through an aerial or satellite dish.
