A huge thank you to all who answered my question. I phoned the vet and had to take him this afternoon. The vet decided to give him an anenema so he will be sedated and i have to phone later tonight. I will let you all know how he is. Thanks again to everyone who offered help

I would like to thank everyone who replied to me question. My dog had an abcess in his anal glands and has also developed a hernia which he has to have an operation on. I am finding it difficult to pick a "best answer" because you have all been brilliant. Thanks again to you all

I am no vet but this could be a symptom of something bigger. I worked with animals before and if his intestines are impacted he could get very ill very quickly. I am not trying to alarm you but if you value your pets the way i do you want to get it checked out. Ten is not that old for a dog so please get it checked out it could just be something simple but if it isn't you'll be able to treat before it too late. Good luck!

I would have to agree with the majority. As nervous as he is, you need to get him to the vet. He may just be a little constipated and as he is an older dog you may need to change his diet to agree more with his older metabolism. You have to be cruel to be kind. There could be something more seriously wrong with him and I think you will agree that you wouldn't want him suffering. The comment made in a previous answer 'just put the damn dog out of its misery' was a disgusting comment to make and obviously made by someone who has no compassion at all. Ignore it, but I would really take him to the vet, and under no circumstances give him any medication. At his time of life his body will be starting to slow down, so as I said before it may just be a simple change in diet that's needed, but better to be sure.
All the best and I hope he is OK.

No. Never give your dog any meds without a docs script. Some meds for us people are toxic to your pet. This may be a sign something is very wrong or simply could be a diet change problem. I would say best to go to the vet and have your friend looked at .

You definately must take him to the vet.Just put your self in his position, would you not go to the Doctor if you were struggling with the same problem ?? I had a Staffie that had the same problem but she was 16yrs old and i was scared of taking her to the vet at first but could not stand the thought of her struggling. If the worst happens at least your dog will be free from suffering and you will always have good memories of him that will last you a life-time !!
Regards and lots of luck to you and your dog !!

im sorry for your dog. don't suppose you can get a home visit from the vet? he could have an infection or a blockage, or anything really, the list is endless, nevertheless it'll be medicine of some kind... you should take him in. If your dog is in immediate pain, try giving half, if not a quarter of 1 paracetamol tablet in some bread, but you need to take him in.

I agree you have to take him to the vey I had a puppy about 10 years ago that got this kind of problem and the vet wasn't fast enough fixing him. He had to be put down it broke my heart. It was because of a blockage that ended up killing all the intestines behind the block because of no circulation or fluid flow.

I read for older dogs a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of canned pumpkin. Not the kind with the spices, but the basic kind. I can't remember the site. But this person swears it worked within 2 days.
Check around the "constipation in dogs" sites too.

You absolutely MUST take your dog to the vet. Constipation can be a sign of a blockage in his intestines for example he may have accidently eaten something inedible that has become stuck. This could kill him.
This may or may not be the case but take your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

the dog seems to be past it. The best thing for the dog would be to take it to the vets or get the vet to make a home visit and maybe have him put to sleep. There isn't much quality of life for the dog if he can't do his business

If your dog is just constipated you should be able to call your vet and ask if there is something over the counter you can give him, or try giving him something greasy to eat. Good Luck I hope he feels better soon WHILE I was replying someone else wrote to try rice in the human race rice binds you up and if my dogs get diahreal I usually give them rice for that ailment, but that is just me.
