Someone called me to ask for a donation for the families of slain police officers - is this legit?

I seriously doubt it. There are only a few police-affiliated agencies that solicit. If you get a call from the Fraternal Order of Police of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, they are legit. However, the people soliciting on their behalf work for marketing companies and will keep a substantial portion of your donation themselves. If want to donate to them, call the the FOP or PBA yourself and make donations. As far as charities for families of slain Officers, I do not know of any that call and solicit money. I have donated to several, but they were charities I contacted after I lost 2 friends in the line of duty. In Indiana we recently had warnings from the Better Business Bureau about agencies calling and going door to door asking for donations for Officer's families. I wouldn't give them any money if they call you. Call the police dept, the attorney general's office, or the BBB and check them out!

Most Police Departments are not in the" asking for money "business, but some of these agencies have Organizations such as FOP,PBA and Benefit Funds. Most do not call as an agency, but have soliciting people to do the calling. I would rather give the money directly to the Agency than someone who will take a share for collecting it. If in doubt, call that agency and ask for someone to verify the issue.

It can be legit, But to make sure and yes I recommend you do check it out. The person/people calling should tell you the police department that they are calling for. Call this police department and they can tell you if they are doing a fund drive or not. If it is a legit operation the callers will not have a problem with calling you back. Just so you know, a portin of this money goes to the company who is calling you. and the rest goes to the police.

No, the police or fire agency itself does not (cannot), but they do have non-profit associations and often solicit donations for a good cause. Be careful, because there are also scams....

No, real law enforcement agencies that I know of never ask for money over the phone.

There are of course dozens of non profit groups that use law enforcemnt type names ( you could incorporate as a non profit group called the police fund for homeless kittens if you want)

I would call the police and let them know about it after I hung up on the people.

it could be but you should never give money to someone who calls you because the company that the phone operator works for takes at least half of the money.

Yes - Firemen call and ask for money - I guess they have a lot of time just sitting around the Fire Station.
