If it's safe where you live, take walks with him outside in the dark. Let him see that it's not only safe, but beautiful. Spend time indoors in the dark with him, maybe listening to music or just talking before he goes to bed. He needs to see that you're not only not afraid, but even comfortable in the dark, and maybe he will come to fear it less.

But a small nightlight is also a good idea while he's learning to overcome his fear.

Not all people are created equal. Some are comfortable in complete darkness, some need some dim light, others need bright light. I belong to the second group. Maybe your son also. Acknowledging differences is most important in life.

put a night light in his room or give him a very small flashlight that doesn't stay on- the ones you have to hold onto the button to keep on, let him sleep with it and use it in case he gets scared he'll have a personal light to shine on the area that's scaring him and realize there is nothing there to be afraid of. i think he'll get over his fears pretty quickly, my son did.

It is normal to be afraid of the dark. I always leave a light on for my kids. Fear is not always a bad thing....and he is only 6.
