My company needs a set of 737-300 landing gear to use for moving/towing airplane during heavy checks while the removed gear is in overhaul. Is it acceptable to use "retired" gear for this? Any good sources for a retired MLG/NLG shipset? Any idea what a reasonable price should be?

For military needs, we often have to remove landing gear for overhaul.

In itself this doesn,t cause too many problems as the aircraft are jacked and trestled for long periods.

On occasion the aircraft do have to be moved ( from hangars to paint shops etc), and for this we would use an expired set of gear that is serviceable for ground use only, always painted bright red, and marked 'SLAVE'.

Unfortunately as to price I can't help, as all our equipment is held on permanant loan.

Lofty is correct, there is no reason an unserviceable set of gear could not be used.
Finding and purchasing them should not be terribly hard, there are lots of salvage yards for aircraft parts, try AAR in OK City.

My only concern is the actual moving of an aircraft during a heavy check, most aircraft can not be moved when certain structural members are removed for checks, (Keel beams, fuel tank covers, spar fittings, pylons, etc, etc)

If you note in any maintenance manual, most all of Boeing's birds require the doors to be shut beofre towing, that is because the doors are a structural member as well.


It is due to this that once we jack and shore a bird for a heavy it stays until it is all back together again, there are laser level checks performed daily to ensure it has not moved on the shoring
to prevent any twisting or warping.

It might be possible but I would make sure that all of the structural members are intact before moving the bird.

just use your car jack. works great! if you want retired gear, look in florida. a reasonable price would be about 2 or 3 dollars. heck, why don't you just take the wheels off altogether and slid down the runway.
