My roomate smokes (Marlboro) and it makes the house and my clothes wreak. She's only allowed to smoke in her room but it's really embarrising. She's trying to quit and she bought an air purifier and uses candles and stuff but it's not working. I can take my clothes out and wear them straight out of the drier but they still have the smell. I'll be in this house with her for the next couple of years and I really need some kind of advice. please?

try using fabreeze . I smoke , and i use a febreeze based tide detergent in my clothes , as well as a fabreeze based fabric softner in the dryer and my clothes smell soooo good ! But , i also smoke outside---> which if your roomate really like you , they should respect you and smoke outside anyways !

You need to tell her to smoke outside. She's doing more damage smoking indoors than if she would just go outside. If you can work that out, you'll probably be all right. But your clothes? Time for some new ones, holmes.

Let her know how you feel, and ask her to smoke outside because it is making you feel uncomfortable, and as a non-smoker you would like her to respect that. I used to smoke in my apartment and my roommate eventually just blew a fit and chased me outside...I didn't mind b.c i respected her and well she was really pissed as well :P and I could understand her arguments to..b/c the smell really does stay on you! So let her know how you feel about it, it's the only way that it will happen...and you know what it will help her to quit to!!

Have her smoke roll-up tobacco, it smells less cause there is less chemicals in it. (i smoke roll-ups and get overwhelmed by tailor made smoke).
Also address this compulsive obsession. I bet you when she stops smoking you will react to another smell sooner or later, maybe will be the fumes from cars you can smell when you walk out the door.

Have her only smoke outside instead of in the house.

It doesn't sound like she's trying very hard to quit smoking?
She could be free of cigarettes and you could be free of the smoke within a week if she tossed her addiction NOW.

Lay down the law. Threaten to move out. She needs to be respectful of you. She also needs to know that it is not OK to smoke inside.

request that your roommate only smoke outside. tell her that its making your clothes, furniture, bedding etc smell like smoke and you don't like going to work etc smelling of smoke. smoke smell gets in your carpet, furniture, turns the walls yellowish and makes your skin and hair smell like smoke.
if she won't go outside to smoke- i would consider finding another roommate that doesn't smoke or moving out yourself and finding another home/roommate with a non-smoker.
