In the UK the education system today ignores grammar and spelling.Children are asked to be creative in their writing with no attention paid to spelling and as they get older they have been stuck in the rut for so long it's impossible for them to change. Lots of them truant and don't even bother to turn up to school to there's no hope there. The goverments over the past 20 years or so just dumbed down on education so this is the result. Mobile phone Text Messaging did nothing to help spelling either.

A bad government provides a bad education system, since its only chance to survive (or even get re-elected) is widespread ignorance and badly educated people. Spelling is only one of the tell-tale signs for that, but it is the one everyone spots easily.

I notice, the faster my typing becomes, the more inaccurate, my spelling becomes. Maybe everyone needs to just slow down a bit. Proofreading also makes a big difference.
