Things I have bought for babies include the memory books (as suggested by the last person) and also photoframes, you can get some where they have space for pics from each month of the first year of babies life. These last a lot longer than some other gifts. It all depends how much you want to spend. You can pick up baby keepsake books for a few pounds from any bookstore.

how about a hamper basket that the mum will use such as nappies, babygro's etc or you could just get a really cute outfit in a neutral colour for a boy or girl. Or you could buy a gymnasium the ones that go on the floor and the baby lies under it. These last a few years too as the baby never gets bored of it.

Well your little brother or sister has the best gift of all which is you who will always look out for them.
I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're young, you could make something or draw a picture which is something they will be able to keep and treasure.
You could get a photograph of yourself and put it in a nice frame to put in your baby's nursery.
How about a special toy like a stuffed bear to put in their cot?
Whatever you get, make sure it will last, so don't buy clothes.

Why dont you get a gift for your mum instead? Alot of people leave out the mammy!
She done all the hard work, a little bathroom set, and maybe get the baby a grooming set?

Mikaela, Madison and the great thing about names is there are many different ways to spell them to make them all your sisters or brothers... My son was 13 when his baby sister was born.. He brought me a bouquet of flowers and asked me to sit with him and go through all the things from when he was a baby. The best gift he gave his sister was his blanket he had when he was a baby, toddler and preschooler.

I'd suggest that you should make something for your unborn brother/sister. Wait till they are born, then get someone to take a picture of you both together, then get a nice frame for the photo. When they get older it will be a very precious memory.
As for names, it's up to you!

some people buy gifts that the mother is going to use a lot, nappies, cream, etc.... or how about a cuddly toy? its hard to know what to get a baby lol

We actually adopted my little brother, but one thing that I got him was a cuddly teddy bear, something that he could connect to as he got older. He loved it, even as he got older. I do like the idea of a picture frame and a picture of you and your new sibling, something that can be treasured when you both are grown up. Those are my most favorite things of me and my two brothers... our fun pictures. I also got my neice a cute stuffed bear when she was born, she takes it everywhere she goes now!
