Depending on the age of the person trying to spell the difficult words, you can do several different things. With younger children you can make a song out of it. With older children and even some adults, I would suggest breaking the word down. I learned how to spell together when I was in grade school, and thought it was the most difficult word I had ever seen. I'm almost 30 years old now, and I still spell it the same way. (to-get-her) If not for that I would have never got it right.

Do a lot of typing in a spell check program, like MS Word. This program highlights or underlines words that you spell wrong, giving you a chance to go back and correct them.
Pay attention to the words you naturally tend to mispell. Those are the ones you have to concentrate on memorizing how to spell, maybe you will even notice some patterns in the words you cannot spell correctly. With time, you will naturallly spell the words you initially spelled wrong with more ease, just so you can avoid having to go back through your paper or typing to correct all the highlighted words!!! ;)

To learn to spell difficult words, look for words within the word. I find the words within the word, and in my head pronounce it the way it is actually spelled.
appendectomy
app end ec to my
Easy!
My son always made 100 on his spelling tests because he did this!
Hope it helps!

visualize the words. begin with writing the words a lot of times on a sheet of paper, then read it aloud each time you do and make sure you look at it each time. close your eyes and visualize it. if you need to peek then do so until you have it down.
