I could go on forever but I'll give you the short list of favorites.

Where the Wild Things Are.........Maurice Sendak

anything by Audrey and Don Wood.....they are a husband and wife team that write wonderful, fun stories with beautiful pictures.....favorites are Napping House, King Bidgoods in the Bathtub, Heckedy Peg,

Maryanna Cusimano Love wrote two books I love......one is Your are my I love you.....the other is Christmas themed...You are my Miracle......

Eric Carle books are great.........Daddy get the Moon for me.......Very Hungry Caterpillar.....etc.

Mean Soup........that one is at school, forget the authors name but its a great book about what to do with strong feelings.....fun for the kids to act out

Owl Babies.......forget the author and my copy is at school...book about children missing their Mommy but how she always comes back, invaluable in my classroom at the beginning of the year when children are having seperation anxiety

There are a lot of books out that you sing instead of
read.......variations on twinkle twinkle little star, itsy bitsy spider and so on that are fun and kids really love

I tend to look for books that have a rhythmn or beat, rhymes are fun and words that repeat are great cuz the kids learn them and read along. Books that the children can act out are wonderful too. It really fosters a love for books if you can take a favorite book and base art, science, math and other activities around it.

*The BOO BOO BOOK (Joy Masoff)is interactive and really lets them use their sense of touch and learn different textures. It explains "what's behind the band aid".
*We're going on a bear hunt (Michael Rosen) is fun for children from toddlers to primary school. The book is fun but you can also go on a "bear hunt" in your house or yard.
*Jamberry (Bruce Degan) was one of my favorites growing up.
* All Dr. Seuss books are great and also Maisy books are pretty funny. I was a day camp counselor for kids ages 4-12 and the 4-6 year olds love the book No David! It really doesnt have many words but the illustrations are great and the kids thought the pictures were funny.

It depends on how old your preschooler is. I personally like:

Peek-A-Boo Kisses - It's a touch and feel book and at the end there is a squeeky mouse belly and then a mirror.

What makes a Rainbow? - As you turn the pages to each color a ribbon rainbow is built at the top of the pages and at the end a full rainbow pops up.

Any Little Golden Book is wonderful

Mothergoose rhymes and nursery rhyme books

I love the book "Hippos Go Berserk!" by Sandra Boynton

It is funny, bright pictures, simple sentences, rhymes and has a math concept built in.

I also love "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn

It is a story about a little raccoon that is nervous about going to school, until his Mom shows him a secret way to carry her love with him always. Just a tender little book that made me cry and smile at the same time.

Good night moon,
Where the wild things are,
Not now Bernard,
The Rainbow fish,
All the Elmer books,
Suddenly,

These books are also a fantastic way to extend activities as there is so much you can do that relate to these books, and also activities that you can make relate to them so the learning seems seemless.

My young son also loves Goodnight Moon. He never tires of it! Also Clifford the Big Red Dog. Maisy has a pirate adventure book with lots of flaps to lift. That's a favorite too.

My preschooler loves Peanut Butter Rhino. There's nothing obviously good about it, but he loves it, my daughter did too at that age.
You can't go wrong with any Dr. Seuss.
For bedtime, I especially recommend Dr. Seuss' The Sleep Book.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is GREAT GREAT GREAT. It teaches the alphabet AND is fun to read for the adult as well.
