What happens when you die depends on what happens before you die. The Bible classifies the whole human race into two broad categories-the saved and the lost. What happens to the saved is radically different from what happens to the lost.
A. For the saved

The Bible is abundantly clear on this point. When the saved die, they go directly into the presence of the Lord. At this point we remember the words of Jesus to the thief on the cross, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). This appears to be a straightforward promise that at the moment of death the repentant thief would pass from his life of crime and his agonizing death into the realm called "paradise." This would seem to contradict the teaching called "soul-sleep" which implies that at death a believer "sleeps" in a kind of suspended animation until the day of the resurrection. How could the thief be that very day in paradise if his soul were to go to sleep when he died? At the moment of death the believer passes immediately into the personal presence of Jesus Christ. This is our hope and comfort as we stand at the graveside of a loved one. Paul said he had a desire to depart and to "be with Christ, which is better by far" (Philippians 1:23). He also said, "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body (that is, separated from the body by death) and at home with the Lord" (II Corinthians 5:8). These are the words of a man who believed that heaven would begin at the moment of his death. Was Paul looking forward to an unconscious slumber after his death? No! He was looking forward to the personal presence of Jesus Christ.

But that's not the whole story. The soul goes to be with the Lord in heaven and the body is buried until the day of resurrection when Jesus returns to the earth. I Thessalonians 4:14 says, "We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." Here you have both sides of the truth. Christians who die are said to be "with Jesus" (that's the soul in the conscious presence of the Lord) and "have fallen asleep in him" (that's the body which "sleeps" in the grave). Listen to Paul's description of that great reunion of body and soul: "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first" (I Thessalonians 4:16). Here is a clear promise of future bodily resurrection for the believer. First Corinthians 15:51-55 adds the crucial fact that our bodies will be "raised imperishable"-that is, with a body that is perfect in every way, free from the vestiges of death and decay. In this life our bodies wear out, like a clock continually running down, but when we are raised, it will be with bodies that can never decay, never wear out, never suffer injury, never grow old, never get sick, and thank God, never die.

What Happens after Death?"

It is clear that during the test during the life of this world, people will be clearly divided in three groups: 1) those, who excel in piety, truthfulness, justice and submission to God; 2) those, who excel in transgression, rejection and are clearly averse to accepting God's truths; and 3) those, who are neither clearly among the first nor clearly among the second group.

As for the first two groups, these are people, who are themselves witnesses upon their own behavior. These are people, whose ultimate destiny - whether it be heaven or hell - is decided during the life of this world and they start enjoying or suffering the fruits of their deeds, immediately after death. If falling in the first category, they shall be in a state of blissful slumber till the Day of Rising, while if falling in the second category, they shall be in a state of torturous slumber till the Day of ultimate Rising.

The fate of the third category of people, which apparently would be the largest in number in the Hereafter, would be decided on the Day of Judgment. Such people, till the Day of Rising will be in a state of dreamless sleep till the Day of Rising.

It should, nevertheless, be kept in mind that whichever category a person may be in, the waiting period from his death till the Day of Reckoning would be insignificant for him, as he would not have any sense of the passing time.

This seems to be the case, as derived from the Qur'an and the various narratives ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh). There is no reason, why the situation may have been any different in the previous revelations of God.

A person may conveniently ascribe to any idea regarding the life, which is yet to come. Everyone will know the reality, as it unfolds itself.

The earth is destined to be our grave, and the Garden of Essence our eternal home. The is no direct likeness between the two, only allusion and image.

Christ has already come again, and most indeed are still too asleep to be even groggily aware of it.

The Thief is in the house, but the house holder is not watchful, and is fast asleep in the presence of Christ's return.

If we are not awake, how can God steal our sorrows of life away? Only dreams of the changes in strange signs are evident to the slumbering.

Ahh the age old question of life after death.

It just depends on the angle at which you choose to approach the matter. Christians believe you will be born again at the second coming of Christ. Then there are those who believe we go to a place where there are a thousand virgins waiting (male belief) and yet again those who believe in reincarnation. The list goes on as far as beliefs go but hey everyone has to have something to believe in...right? this link might help you out some more.

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

2Ti 2:11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

I believe that the body rots, but their soul goes to a place, which we call heaven. It's beautiful, and we can meet souls of our dead relatives and friends there. Then we are reborn, and come back to earth.
This is no imagination. Hinduism has always supported this claim, and it has been proven. If you read Many Lives, Many Masters by Dr. Brian Weiss, you'll understand what I'm saying. Dr. Weiss has also written more books about this. He hypnotises people, and they can remember their past lives. Do read the book if you don't believe me!

Everybody has an idea. This sounds more like a philosophy exercise. The only two people that answered from the Bible at the time I read this were KNOWBIBLE and SABRINA S.. Of those two KNOWBIBLE is the more accurate. Only because SABRINA S. didn't finish the thought she started quoting. The Bible reveals there will be more than one resurrection.

Of course you will go into the ground, but what happens to your lifeforce? Our lifeforce is composed of energy, and the Law of Matter and Energy states that energy can neither be created not destroyed, only transformed. Being so, at the point of death, our lifeforce does not cease to exist but is transformed. Into what you might ask? That would depend on the type of energy your lifeforce radiates. Criminals and killers radiate a different type of energy than righteous and humane beings. Perhaps there is some remote truth to reincarnation, rebirth, past lives, teleportation, cosmic ascension, etc. Who knows??? Certainly not you or I.

There is no conscious awareness outside the brain.

When we die, our bodies are recycled and probably become parts of other bodies at some distant time in the future.

The universe is one giant recycling machine; everything gets recycled.

I personally believe that we are all reincarnated. No I'm not a Hindu, and I don't believe that what you return as has anything to do with your prior life, however think about this:

What would God do with a growing stack of souls? wouldn't he be smart enough to recycle?
