Bang on dude. Christ gave us the key to an incredible life and most of us hardly ever use it. Sometimes I can't believe how stupid I am when I actually marvel at the consistency of his teachings and then stumble a second time.

Luk 8:11 And the parable is this: The seed is the Word of God.
Luk 8:12 Those by the roadside are the ones who hear; then the Devil comes and takes the Word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
Luk 8:13 Those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the Word with joy. And these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
Luk 8:14 And those which fell among thorns are the ones who, when they have heard, go forth and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of life, and do not bear to maturity.
Luk 8:15 But those on the good ground are the ones who, in an honest and good heart, having heard the Word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience.

I have often wondered what God has promised. I mean, so many verses are similar to "It rains on the Just and UnJust" that it leads me to believe that you are not promised anything more than anyone else can have. The only thing I see being offered (from a Christian to a Non) is Heaven. But no promises of anything in this life, other than "God is not a respector of Persons". So that tells me god isn't going to give someone else something, just because they believe.

I think, the one should not be thought to be a contradiction to the other. It is a natural and legitimate tendency of humanity to settle things and make a better world and live a better and longer life. Nevertheless, the problems man started struggling with and trying to solve thousands of years ago, still remain the same and will never ever be settled by man's efforts because man himself is the main part of them and this makes the whole process a vicious circle.
The problem is that the "natural" ("soulish", "carnal") man is a member of Adam's fallen race (just like myself was) and, from birth, an enemy of God. Consequently, we, living in our own devices and pride, how could we like anything from our enemy? We insist doing things by our “own powers and resources” as if there were any of them. Any kind of plan for a better life would do (even -not to say especially- the most complex and unattainable), but just don't let it be God's plan. Moreover, God's plan is (with exceeding wisdom) designed by Him to be simple (yet perfect) and comprehensive by absolutely everyone and, because of that, it seems sheer foolishness to our proud selves. But it is through exactly this "foolishness of the preaching" that God decided to save man and to provide with eternal and better (best) life. God bless!

Freewill is something that has already been brought up by another.
Something else is pride. People like to think that they are in control and have a hard time following the way that God would have them to go in life.
Bottom line is that some people make stupid choices that they are accountable for. Not that God still isn't there waiting on them to come back to the right path - just that we do have the freedom to make stupid mistakes vs making a wise choice.

You are insinuating in the question that the life promised to us and we reject is not as good as the one we want to have and strive for.
Why do people view a life not promised by god to be better? I think its because the religionization of things has messed this up, and MAN has offered crappy lives to people that they are turning down for better things.
I guess my answer is that people finally really see the light....and wake up to reality and see what life is really about, and that is family, friends and living..........

I'd think that this is because god, and whatever a god can promise to us, is based on faith alone. Faith is something that you need to find as an individual in your own life, and that faith doesn't have to be in anything divine either.
I want to have a better life - but the faith that I have is in myself and my ability to make my own decisions and make that better life happen.

Because God gave us free will. For some reason we developed a stubborn streak to go with it.
God makes a promise, and it is up to us to admit that God is ALWAYS right. That is hard to do for anyone. To let go and let God.
It's the best way, but it is still hard to do.

god hasn't promised me a better life. I alone am responsible for what I do and the consequences of my actions. I don't thank anybody for my good fortune or blame anyone for my poor fortune except myself.
It's strange that the harder I work, the better my life becomes.

God will not do for you what you will not do for yourself. So if to wrap it around. If you are unsatisfied with your life and you are trying to improve it then God will help. and if that is the case then the life "promised" by God is the one you are working towards.
